Chapter 6 - The Unstable Daughter

At the hospital, Leah learned her knee would require surgery.
The injury was serious but repairable, the orthopedic surgeon told her. Repairable became the word she held onto that night. Not fine. Not easy. Not fair. Repairable.
Avery came to the hospital two hours later.
Her eyes were swollen, and her left hand was bare.
“I’m sorry,” she said before reaching the bed. “I should have believed something was wrong sooner.”
Leah shook her head. “You did believe it. That’s why you checked your phone.”
Avery sat beside her. “He told me you were unstable.”
Leah smiled faintly.
“Of course he did.”
“He said you hated him because your parents loved him more.”
“They did.”
Avery blinked, surprised by the honesty.
Leah looked at the ceiling. “That doesn’t mean I hated him. It means I knew him.”
The attorney downtown called the next morning. The sealed envelope Leah sent before dinner contained copies of Nolan’s Nevada marriage certificate, messages from Marisol, financial records Leah had gathered, and a written statement describing her concern that Nolan might become violent once exposed.
The attorney had received it before the kitchen incident.
That mattered.
It established preexisting fear, motive, and preparation. It showed Leah had not invented the bigamy claim after being hurt. It showed she had acted to protect Avery, not to create drama.
By afternoon, Vivian’s version began spreading through relatives.
Leah had attacked Nolan’s happiness.
Leah fell during an argument.
Leah had always been unstable.
Then Avery posted one public statement.
I ended my engagement because Nolan Whitaker is legally married to another woman. Leah told me the truth. She was hurt after trying to protect me. Please do not contact me to defend him.
No details about the injury.
No theatrics.
Just enough truth to stop the family machine from writing over her.
Marisol shared the Nevada record through her attorney.
The word bigamy began moving through conversations Vivian could no longer control.
Leah lay in the hospital bed with her leg braced, phone silent beside her, and felt something unfamiliar.

Not victory.
Space.
