The knock came before Nolan could reach for the phone.

Not the front doorbell.

A firm, controlled knock at the back entrance near the kitchen.

Everyone froze.

Vivian’s eyes narrowed. “Who is that?”

Leah let her head rest back against the cabinet, exhausted and sweating from pain.

“Nolan’s wife.”

Avery turned sharply.

Nolan’s face lost color.

The knock came again.

This time, a man’s voice followed it. “Columbus Police. Open the door.”

Vivian’s confidence cracked first.

Their father finally stood.

Nolan looked toward the hallway like a trapped animal searching for another exit.

“You called the police?” he hissed at Leah.

Leah swallowed hard. “No. Marisol did.”

That was not entirely true.

Leah had sent Marisol the documents, the address, and the message Avery needed to know before she married him. Marisol, who had been trying for months to get Nolan served with legal papers and had already spoken to a detective about financial fraud tied to their marriage, brought Detective Aaron Price with her.

Marisol stood behind him when the door opened.

She was in her early thirties, dark hair pulled back, face pale but steady. She looked at Nolan first, then at Avery, then at Leah on the floor.

Her expression changed.

“What did he do?”

Nolan stepped back. “This is a family misunderstanding.”

Detective Price’s eyes moved to the metal rod on the tile.

Then to Leah’s twisted posture.

Then to Avery crying near the island.

“Everyone stay where you are,” he said.

Vivian immediately shifted into performance.

“Officer, my daughter fell. She has always been dramatic, and this family has been under stress because of her behavior.”

Leah lifted her phone with a shaking hand.
