Chapter 7 - THE RECOGNITION OF THE UNSEEN

Rhodes stood up straight, turning slowly to face his Commanding Officer.
His face was completely drained of color. The deep lines around his eyes seemed to have aged five years in thirty seconds. His hands, normally steady as hydraulic vices, were gripped tight into fists at his sides to hide the subtle tremor in his fingers.
"I know that insignia," Rhodes said, his voice shaking with a quiet, suppressed horror.
Mercer looked at Rhodes, then down at Amelia’s shoulder, then back to Rhodes. He saw no insignia—only the standard Navy Working Uniform, the silver Lieutenant bars on her collar, and the standard U.S. Navy tab over her right breast pocket.
"What insignia?" Mercer demanded, his voice laced with growing frustration. "She’s wearing standard Type III utilities, Daniel. What the hell are you talking about?"
Rhodes didn't answer immediately. He looked down at Amelia again, his eyes filled with a terrifying mixture of profound respect and deep, instinctual fear.
"From where, Senior?" Mercer repeated, stepping closer, his voice rising in volume. "Where do you know her from?"
Rhodes didn't look at Mercer. He kept his eyes fixed on Amelia as if he were staring at an unexploded nuclear warhead sitting on a dining table in Coronado.
"She wasn't at Norfolk, Commander," Rhodes whispered, his voice cutting through the silent room like a razor through silk. "And she isn't an auditor."
"Then who is she?" Mercer snapped.
Rhodes took a slow, agonizing breath through his nose, his eyes never leaving Amelia’s face.
"She’s someone who was never supposed to be in this room," Rhodes said softly. "And if she's here... it means the entire chain of command above this facility has already been bypassed."
A wave of cold, prickling static seemed to pass through the forty operators surrounding the tables. The remaining chuckles, the whispers, the clattering of silver—all of it vanished into absolute, suffocating silence.

Mercer stared at Rhodes, his mouth opening slightly as he tried to process the look of absolute terror on his most senior, most experienced enlisted operator's face.
Amelia slowly reached down, picked up her plastic water cup, and took a small, measured sip, her hazel eyes staring straight ahead into the quiet room.
