Chapter 6 - THE SHIFT IN TEMPERATURE

Mercer’s smile faded, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated irritation. He pushed himself off the counter, taking a step toward the center aisle with his coffee cup held loosely in his right hand.

"What are you talking about, Daniel?" Mercer asked, his tone laced with heavy rank authority. "She’s a staff lieutenant from Norfolk. She's here to audit our logistics logs."

"She isn't from Norfolk, Commander," Rhodes said softly, his voice never rising above a conversational tone, yet carrying a weight that made every operator within twenty feet freeze.

The operators sitting near Amelia’s table looked up, their eyes darting between the hardened Senior Chief and the quiet young woman sitting before her untouched tray.

Mercer frowned, his eyes narrowing as he walked closer, his heavy combat boots thudding against the floor. "Senior Chief, you're out of line. Step back from the Lieutenant's table."

Rhodes didn't step back. He took one step closer to Amelia, leaning down slightly so his face was three inches from hers.

Amelia finally looked directly into Rhodes's eyes.

For the first time since she had walked through the double doors of the dining hall, her unreadable face changed. Her eyelids narrowed by a fraction of a millimeter. Her hazel eyes flickered with a cold, analytical sharpness—a micro-expression that recognized Rhodes not as a random Senior Chief, but as a man who knew what he was looking at.

Rhodes leaned closer still and whispered four words into her ear.

The words were spoken so softly that even the operator sitting two feet away at the same table couldn't hear the consonants. It was a sequence of low, gutteral syllables—a tactical designation that had no meaning in standard English or military parlance.

Amelia froze.

Her body didn't shift, but her hands on the table went rigid as steel rods. The faint color in her cheeks vanished entirely, leaving her skin as pale as marble. For three seconds, the entire dining hall seemed to stop spinning as two people from completely different worlds stared at each other across a stainless-steel tray.

Mercer reached them, stopping three feet away, his jaw set, his patience completely exhausted.

"Senior Chief, I asked you a question," Mercer growled, his voice low and dangerous. "What is this nonsense?"
