Chapter 10 - THE RESIDUAL FROST

The heavy hydraulic doors clicked shut behind Lieutenant Amelia Carter, sealing the dining hall once again.
The room remained dead silent.
Forty elite military operators sat glued to their seats, their food untouched, their eyes fixed on Commander Grant Mercer, who was still standing in the center aisle staring at the empty doorway.
His coffee cup was crushed flat in his hand, dark liquid dripping slowly onto the polished gray floor, splashing against the toe of his clean black boot.
Senior Chief Rhodes took a slow, deep breath, his shoulders relaxing by an inch as the tension in his spine began to thaw. He didn't look at Mercer. He turned his head and looked around the room at the forty young men who had been laughing and mocking her five minutes ago.
Every single operator who met Rhodes’s eyes immediately dropped his head, staring down at his plate in complete, mortified silence.
"Senior Chief," Mercer said, his voice hollow, barely higher than a whisper. "What... what did you say to her?"
Rhodes turned slowly to look at his Commanding Officer.
"I gave her the verification phrase for her operational group, sir," Rhodes said flatly.
Mercer swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward the closed hydraulic doors. "And what did she say back?"
Rhodes looked Mercer directly in the eyes, his grey eyes cold as stone.
"She didn't say anything, sir," Rhodes whispered. "She just looked at me to let me know that if she had wanted to... this entire room would have been cleared before any of you could have drawn a sidearm."
Mercer felt a shudder run down his spine, cold as arctic water.

He looked down at his left boot—the spotless, clean black leather that had cost him his authority, his dignity, and his understanding of the world he commanded.
Overhead, the fluorescent lights hummed inside their wire cages. The American flag hung limp against the concrete bulkhead. And across the forty stainless-steel tables of the Coronado mess hall, not a single man moved, spoke, or raised his fork for the rest of the night.
