Chapter 6 - DIANE’S EMAIL

Diane insisted she knew nothing about the refinance structure.

I believed she did not understand every number.

Then Grace found an email Diane had forwarded to the lender’s broker three weeks before the divorce became final.

The subject line read:

Megan Release Timing.

Diane wrote:

Trevor says Megan will cooperate after the decree. She has always hated confrontation and will sign when the family is present. Please prepare whatever is needed so we can avoid delays.

Attached was a scanned sample of my signature.

It came from a holiday card I had mailed Diane the previous year.

Diane had not forged the release herself.

She had supplied the signature sample and helped coordinate the pressure.

When I confronted her, she sat in the breakfast room with both hands around a cold coffee mug.

“I thought the form would be completed after you signed.”

“Why did the broker need a sample of my signature?”

“Trevor said they needed to compare it.”

“Lenders compare signatures after receiving signed documents. They do not ask a former mother-in-law to send samples privately.”

Her eyes filled.

“He said the company would fail if the refinance did not close.”

“So you helped him represent that I had already agreed.”

“I was trying to protect my son.”

“You were trying to make my consent unnecessary.”

She looked toward Trevor.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that he had used her loyalty the same way he used everyone else’s assets.

Vanessa reacted differently.

She hired an attorney.

Within forty-eight hours, she began distancing herself from Hale Residential Services. She claimed Trevor controlled the invoices and used her name because her credit was cleaner.

Emails showed she had negotiated the inflated fees herself.

One message to Trevor read:

Once Megan is off title, we can bill whatever the house supports. Mom won’t question it.

Another said:

Make sure she signs before valuation. If the appraiser sees the unfinished work, the numbers drop.

They had not expected me to remain for the inspection.

That was why Diane had entered the breakfast room demanding I leave.
