Chapter 6 - TWO PREGNANCIES AND A MISSING EMBRYO

The consequences arrived faster than the answers.

Daniel moved out of the hotel and into his unused corporate apartment because I told him I did not want him back home. He asked whether the pregnancy changed anything about that decision. I told him the baby changed what we would have to figure out as parents, not what he had done as my husband.

For three years he had allowed intimacy with Vanessa to exist in the gray zone because defining it would require giving something up. He enjoyed being needed by both of us. The kiss in Chicago was not Margaret’s fault. Neither was the dance I walked away from.

Daniel stopped arguing when I said that.

Vanessa took leave from Bennett Group after staff began noticing her absence. We had kept the embryo story private, but rumors about her pregnancy and closeness with Daniel moved through the company within days. She blamed Margaret for manipulating her and Daniel for never creating boundaries strong enough to make Margaret’s version obviously impossible.

She was right about both.

That still did not make her innocent.

The missing B-19 embryo became our immediate problem.

The New Jersey clinic, Evergreen Reproductive Center, refused to identify the recipient without a court order. Rachel obtained one after demonstrating that the embryo originated from Daniel’s and my genetic material and had apparently been moved without either of our authorization.

The transfer request had not come from Margaret.

It came from Northstar.

Authorization attached:

AMY BENNETT.

Again.

My forged signature.

But this one used a signature sample different from the first forgery.

Rachel recognized it before I did.

“This came from the gala foundation paperwork.”

Every year the Bennett Foundation required both Daniel and me to sign conflict disclosures because I sat on an advisory committee. Margaret’s office kept the forms.

Someone with access to Bennett Foundation records had forged the second transfer.

Daniel immediately suspected his mother.

I did too.

Then Rachel obtained metadata from the document.

The file had been created on a Bennett Group computer assigned to Vanessa.

Vanessa denied it.

“Someone used my office.”

“Who has access?” Daniel asked.

“My assistant. IT. Senior executives.”

“Your password?”

Vanessa looked uncomfortable. “Margaret knows it.”

Of course she did.

But digital logs complicated that explanation. The document was created at 10:42 p.m. on a night Margaret attended a charity dinner in Palm Beach.

Vanessa was in Manhattan.

So was Daniel.

So was I.

Someone else had created it.

The first consequence of Chapter 5 had therefore expanded the conspiracy beyond Margaret.

At the same time, my pregnancy became harder to keep private. My obstetrician placed me on modified activity after spotting appeared at eleven weeks. It was not necessarily dangerous, but the stress made every argument feel physically irresponsible.

For once Daniel did the useful thing instead of the dramatic one. He stopped pushing for reconciliation and began handling practical problems: lawyers, security, household logistics, food when I forgot to eat.

It did not repair trust.

It showed me the version of him that had made the marriage worth fighting for once.

Then Evergreen released one critical record.

B-19 had been transferred into a gestational carrier seven months earlier.

The transfer failed.

No pregnancy resulted.

Relief lasted less than a minute.

Because Evergreen’s file included a refund request submitted after the failed transfer.

Refund recipient:

Bennett Family Holdings.

Authorized by:

MARGARET BENNETT.

I called her immediately.

She insisted she had never heard of Evergreen.

Rachel requested Bennett Family Holdings bank records.

The refund entered the account.

Two days later, the exact amount left again.

Payee:

VICTORIA REED CONSULTING.

Daniel recognized the name.

Victoria Reed had been his father’s longtime estate attorney before disappearing from family business six years earlier after a dispute with Margaret.

The family story had just gained a person Margaret hated enough never to mention.

And she had apparently received money connected to our stolen embryo.
