Chapter 2 - VANESSA’S ULTRASOUND

I did not go back to the ballroom. Daniel came outside instead, still wearing his tuxedo, and found me halfway down the block with my coat pulled around my shoulders. Margaret followed several minutes later, but Vanessa did not. Daniel kept saying he had not known she was pregnant, and the more often he repeated it, the less useful the sentence became.

I asked him one question. “Could it be yours?”

He looked at me too long.

That was worse than an immediate denial.

Daniel admitted that eight months earlier, after a Bennett Foundation conference in Chicago, he and Vanessa kissed in a hotel bar. He insisted it had stopped there, that both of them had been drinking, and that he had told Vanessa the next morning it could never happen again. He had not told me because, in his words, nothing else happened and he did not want to destroy our marriage over one mistake.

“One mistake you hid for eight months.”

“Yes.”

“And all the years before that?”

He rubbed both hands over his face. “I should’ve listened to you.”

It was the kind of apology I had wanted two years earlier. Hearing it now only confirmed that I had never been imagining the intimacy between them.

Margaret interrupted before the argument could expand. She said Vanessa’s pregnancy had nothing to do with Chicago. The certainty in her voice made both Daniel and me turn toward her.

“How do you know?” I asked.

Margaret looked immediately as if she regretted speaking.

Daniel stepped closer. “Mom.”

She told us Vanessa had undergone fertility treatment at a private clinic in Connecticut. She claimed Vanessa wanted a child and had chosen donor embryos because of a medical condition that made producing viable eggs difficult. Margaret knew because she had helped arrange the clinic referral.

Daniel stared at her. “Since when are you involved in Vanessa’s fertility treatment?”

“Since she asked me for help.”

“Why you?”

Margaret’s composure returned just enough for her to sound offended. “Because I’ve known her since she was twenty-two. Because she works for our family. Because she didn’t have anyone else she trusted.”

I watched her as she spoke. Margaret was an excellent liar when she had time to prepare. When she improvised, she overexplained.

I asked how far along Vanessa was.

“Fourteen weeks.”

The number bothered me immediately. Fourteen weeks placed conception roughly four weeks before the Chicago conference. Daniel’s kiss could not explain the pregnancy.

For one brief, humiliating moment, relief passed through me.

Then Daniel asked which clinic.

Margaret did not answer.

That was our first contradiction.

The next morning Daniel moved into a hotel because I told him I needed space. I stayed in our Upper West Side apartment and attended my first obstetric appointment alone, then spent the afternoon trying to decide whether knowing Vanessa’s baby was probably not Daniel’s changed anything about my marriage.

It did not.

The emotional betrayal was real even if the pregnancy belonged to someone else.

Around four, Daniel called and said Vanessa had agreed to speak with us. I almost refused. Then he told me she had said one thing before hanging up.

“Amy needs to see my ultrasound.”

We met at Daniel’s office after everyone else left. Vanessa arrived without the confidence she had carried in the ballroom. She looked tired, frightened, and visibly pregnant only if you knew to look.

She placed an ultrasound image on the conference table.

I recognized the clinic logo immediately.

Northstar Reproductive Medicine.

The same fertility network Daniel and I had used four years earlier.

My attention shifted to the printed line beneath Vanessa’s name.

EMBRYO TRANSFER — FROZEN.

I felt Daniel move beside me.

Vanessa did not look at him.

She looked at me.

“I was told you knew.”

“Knew what?”

Her eyes filled.

“That the embryo was yours.”

For several seconds no one spoke.

I thought she meant Daniel’s.

Then she pushed a laboratory sheet across the table.

Embryo identification:

B-17.

Genetic source:

DANIEL BENNETT / AMY BENNETT.

My name.

My eggs.

Daniel’s sperm.

A child created during one of our IVF cycles was growing inside Vanessa.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked genuinely terrified.

“I didn’t authorize this.”

Vanessa whispered, “Your signature is on the release.”

May you like

Then she looked at me.

“So is yours.”
