Chapter 6 - THE SHIFTING WINDS
The ocean breeze carried the low rumble of an approaching harbor patrol boat as it cut through the water toward the pier, its searchlights sweeping the area beneath the warship’s hull.
Chloe stared at her sister, her jaw slightly slack, her eyes wide with a combination of disbelief and mounting horror. The expensive white blazer she wore felt absurdly out of place, an embarrassing costume amidst the stark grey efficiency of the naval station.
"What... what did he just call you?" Chloe whispered, her voice barely audible above the hum of the ship's engines.
The Commander said nothing. She maintained her pristine, upright posture, acknowledging the Senior Chief with a brief, authoritative nod before turning her gaze back toward the open bay. She was no longer her sister’s peer; she was an officer in the middle of an active security crisis.
Behind Chloe, a third security officer, wearing a tactical vest and holding a radio receiver against his ear, listened intently to a fast burst of encrypted static. His eyes swept across the pier, passing over the inspection crates, until they locked directly onto Chloe.
His expression hardened instantly. The professional caution in his posture transformed into clear, cold intent.
The Commander caught the shift in the officer's eyes. She slowly turned her head, her gray eyes following the officer's stride as he unclipped a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his tactical belt.
The officer began walking toward them, his heavy boots striking the deck in a deliberate, unhurried cadence.
Chloe’s face drained of every last drop of color. The arrogance that had carried her onto the pier vanished completely, leaving her looking small, frail, and utterly defenseless under the bright California sun.

"Sister... please," Chloe gasped, taking a timid step toward the Commander, her hands raised in a pleading gesture. "Tell them it was a mistake. Tell them we're sisters!"
The Commander did not move an inch to cover her. "You breached a restricted military installation, assaulted a senior officer, and destroyed classified defense hardware, Chloe. There are no mistakes on this pier."
