Chapter 2 - THE POINT OF NO RETURN

The ocean churned green and dark forty feet below the concrete lip of Pier 12. Heavy rubber fenders groaned against the steel hull of the warship as gentle swells rolled in from San Diego Bay.

Chloe retreated until the heel of her designer shoe pressed against the yellow safety curb at the very edge of the drop. She lifted the Commander’s heavy leather work bag into the air, balancing it recklessly over the open water. Her eyes glittered with spiteful satisfaction, completely blind to the lethal military gravity of the environment she had invaded.

The Commander stood completely still. She did not reach out, nor did she take a step forward, knowing that any sudden movement might trigger an erratic reaction from her volatile sister. However, her voice shifted instantly from cold family annoyance to sharp, unyielding military authority.

"That bag contains a classified encrypted tablet," the Commander stated, her voice slicing through the ocean breeze like a blade. "Put it down. Now."

Chloe let out a sharp, mocking laugh that sounded frail against the massive backdrop of the grey warship. She mistook her sister’s immobility for helplessness. In Chloe's mind, this was the moment she finally stripped away the stoic composure that had always made her feel inferior.

"Let’s see how important you are without your props," Chloe sneered, her voice dripping with venom.

With a wide, deliberate swing of her arm, Chloe pitched the heavy leather bag out into the open air.

The bag arced over the clear blue sky before descending rapidly toward the dark water below. The heavy military-grade hardware inside pulled it straight down.

The Commander did not scream. She did not rush to the edge. She did not even blink. She simply watched the trajectory of the falling bag with cold, analytical detachment.

The bag struck the surface with a heavy splash, sending a spray of white foam against the hull of the warship. Within three seconds, the weight of the encrypted tablet and steel casing dragged the bag beneath the dark waves, swallowing it whole.

Chloe stood on the edge, panting slightly, a triumphant smile plastered across her face. She turned back to face her sister, expecting tears, anger, or panic.

Instead, she met a wall of absolute silence.
