Chapter 3 - THE ALERT

The splash dissolved into ripples on the surface of the bay, but on the concrete pier, time seemed to stop entirely. The Commander stood motionless, her gaze fixed on the spot where the bag had vanished beneath the dark water.
Then, the silence collapsed.
On the Commander’s left wrist, a heavy, matte-black tactical monitor lit up with blinding intensity. A series of bright crimson LEDs began pulsing in rapid succession. The encrypted tablet, designed to detect water submersion and sudden pressure changes while unauthenticated, had automatically initiated a emergency protocol.
A piercing, multi-tonal electronic alarm tore through the air of Pier 12.
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
The high-decibel signal was not a civilian car alarm; it was a hardened military threat detection ping designed to broadcast directly to the warship’s combat information center and the base's security precinct.
Across the entire length of the pier, the rhythmic hum of work instantly vanished. Mechanics dropped their wrenches, logistics clerks slammed their binders shut, and armed watchstanders snapped their heads toward the sound. The casual atmosphere of an morning inspection vanished in a fraction of a second, replaced by rigid, high-alert military precision.
Chloe’s triumphant smile began to falter. The sheer volume of the alarm vibrated in her chest, rattling her teeth. She looked down at her sister’s flashing wrist monitor, then out at the sudden, unnatural stillness of the sailors surrounding them.
"What... what is that noise?" Chloe muttered, her confidence taking its first serious hit. "Turn it off!"
May you like
The Commander did not answer. She stood with her arms relaxed at her sides, her face an unreadable mask of iron discipline as the crimson lights cast steady flashes across the golden brass insignia on her collar.
Chloe took a step back from the edge of the pier, her eyes darting nervously between her sister's stoic face and the sudden movement of navy personnel along the ship's gangway. The ocean breeze blew a strand of loose hair across Chloe's eyes, but for the first time since she had arrived, she felt a cold knot of dread tightening in her stomach.
