Chapter 5 - The Approaching Footsteps

Silence fell over Room 412, heavy and suffocating, punctuated only by the beep of the heart monitor attached to Lauren's bed and the steady rain outside.
Adrian opened his mouth to dismiss her statement, but before he could utter a word, a series of heavy, rhythmic footsteps echoed from the linoleum hallway outside the heavy door.
These weren't the soft, rubber-soled steps of nurses or floor doctors. They were hard, synchronized, combat-boot impacts on tile—moving with absolute purpose and tactical speed.
The entire Whitaker family froze. Evan turned away from the window for the first time, his brow furrowing in confusion. Celeste straightened in her chair, her cold composure giving way to a sudden, anxious flicker in her eyes. Adrian turned his head toward the door, his throat swallowing hard.
KNOCK. KNOCK. KNOCK.
Three clean, powerful raps rattled the heavy wood of the door marked 412.
Slowly, the door swung inward.
The bright hallway light spilled into the dim hospital room, casting long, dramatic shadows across the floor tile. Standing in the threshold were several tall, imposing silhouettes dressed in dark tactical service dress and duty uniforms.
One shadow stepped slightly forward, raising a hand into the room. In that hand, held firmly at chest level, was a small, metallic identification object—a badge case or official credential folder—but the harsh backlighting prevented anyone from reading the insignia or identifying the face behind it.
The visitors remained shadowed, an ominous force standing in the doorway.
Adrian stared at the figures. His eyes widened, the blood draining completely from his face until he looked as pale as the hospital sheets.
Lauren leaned forward from the bed, her trembling hand reaching out to clutch the sleeve of her mother's uniform coat. Her voice shook with a mixture of terror and utter confusion.

"Mom..." Lauren whispered, her eyes wide as she looked from the doorway back to her mother. "Who did you call?"
Rebecca didn't look down at her daughter. She didn't offer a word of explanation to the Whitaker family. She simply stood tall in her Army combat uniform, her posture rigid, staring directly at the shadowed figures who had just arrived.
