Chapter 2 - The Blockade and the Counter

The brief moment of maternal recognition was cut off as Adrian Whitaker took two fast, calculated strides into the center of the room, placing his tall frame directly between Rebecca and the hospital bed.

"This is a family matter, Colonel," Adrian said smoothly, his tone laced with patronizing authority. He adjusted the cuffs of his navy suit jacket, using his body to shield Lauren from her mother’s sightline. "You need to step outside so we can finish discussing the discharge paperwork."

Rebecca didn't pause to argue. She made a sharp, disciplined movement to step left around his shoulder, her boots clicking firmly on the tile floor.

Adrian immediately shifted his weight, extended his right arm, and firmly grabbed Rebecca’s left shoulder to block her path. "I said, hold on."

The moment his fingers clamped onto the fabric of her combat uniform, Rebecca’s training kicked in with absolute precision. She snapped around to face him, her eyes locking onto his with terrifying intensity.

Before Adrian could register his mistake, Rebecca’s left hand shot up, trapping his right wrist against her shoulder. In one fluid, explosive motion, she pivoted her hips, caught his elbow lever with her right palm, and redirected his own forward momentum straight down and backward.

Adrian gasped as his balance was completely erased. He stumbled violently backward, his expensive leather shoes sliding hard across the waxed floor tile until his lower back crashed heavily into the plastic frame of the visitor's chair. The chair skidded three feet across the floor with a loud, jarring screech before slamming against the far wall.

Adrian collapsed awkwardly into the seat, his navy jacket disheveled, his luxury watch catching the fluorescent light as his wrist throbbed from the joint lock. He stared up at her in utter, speech-deprived shock.

Rebecca didn't even look down at him. She released her grip, her stance relaxed yet lethal.

"Do not touch me again," she said, her voice dropping into a razor-thin whisper.

She turned her back on him instantly, stepping past the stunned silence in the room to reach her daughter’s bedside.
