Chapter 4 - The Threat and the Dial

From the visitor's chair, Adrian scrambled back to his feet, pulling his navy suit jacket straight with violent, trembling snaps of his arms. His face was flushed red with embarrassment and fury, his legal composure cracking under the weight of his public humiliation.

He stepped forward, standing alongside his mother, Celeste, while Evan remained motionless by the window like a coward in the shadows.

"You can't just take her, Colonel," Adrian barked, his voice sharp with legal malice. "She's married to my brother. If you make this a legal issue—if you pull her out of this room right now and try to file a police report—we will file counter-claims immediately. We'll destroy her reputation. We'll release the medical records from her past therapy sessions. We will tie you and her up in Guilford County court until she doesn't have a dime left."

Rebecca slowly stood up to her full height, turning around to face the Whitaker family. Her face remained completely expressionless, devoid of fear, anger, or hesitation.

Without saying a word, she reached into the tactical pocket on the left sleeve of her uniform coat and pulled out her dark grey smartphone.

Adrian saw the phone and let out a short, arrogant smirk, crossing his arms over his chest as if he had already won the legal chess match.

"Calling your lawyer?" Adrian sneered, his confidence rushing back. "Go ahead. Call whoever you want. My firm has twenty litigators in Charlotte ready to file injunctions by midnight."

Rebecca looked directly into Adrian’s eyes, her gaze flat and unyielding.

"I already did," she said softly.

The smirk immediately evaporated from Adrian’s face.
