Chapter 9 - THE STANDING OVATION

The electronic horn sounded, marking the official end of the Coronado Inter-Service Long Range Championship.
For three full seconds, no one spoke. Then, the scorer at Lane Twelve stood up from his bench, turned toward the stands, and raised both hands into the air.
“Winner of the Championship... Master Sergeant Tara Wells, retired!” the PA announcer’s voice boomed across the facility, his tone laced with genuine awe.
The spectator stands erupted into a deafening roar. Hundreds of sailors, Marines, soldiers, and civilian spectators rose to their feet, delivering a standing ovation that echoed across the entire valley. Sponsored competitors from neighboring lanes clapped their hands, shaking their heads in utter admiration of the masterclass they had just witnessed.
Calloway stepped over to Lane Twelve, offering Tara a crisp, respectful military salute before extending his hand. “Finest shooting I’ve ever seen on this range, Master Sergeant.”
“Thank you, Sergeant,” Tara said softly, shaking his hand with a warm, steady grip.
She calmly sat back on her heels, cleared her rifle’s chamber, inserted the bright red safety flag, and placed the weapon back into her battered twenty-year-old case. She zipped the canvas shut and secured the metal latches over the silver duct tape.

Up in the pavilion, two military police officers stepped onto the deck, standing silently on either side of Rear Admiral Crawford. The Admiral did not say a word. He stood motionless, watching as the woman he had dismissed as a "Walmart sniper" packed her gear in front of the world's media.
He knew his career was over. The classified document lying on the table had sealed his fate, ensuring that an Inspector General investigation would examine every decision he had made on and off the field.
