Chapter 6 - THE NAME IN THE FILE

The loud hum of the crowd and the roar of the wind generators continued to fill the air, but inside the central review pavilion, a heavy, suffocating silence descended.
The Senior Range Official tapped Crawford sharply on the arm. He didn't use the Admiral's title. He simply motioned for him to step away from the railing and step into the shaded interior of the booth.
Crawford turned, irritated by the interruption just as his trap was about to spring on Lane Twelve. "What is it, Colonel? We're on a tight broadcast schedule."
Without speaking, the Senior Official handed him the open file.
Crawford took the document casually, holding it in one hand as he glanced down at the top page. The audience in the stands and the broadcast cameras below could only see the back of the heavy leather folder; the contents remained completely hidden.
Crawford read the first paragraph.
His smug, satisfied smile vanished as if struck by a physical blow.
His eyes widened, darting rapidly from left to right as he processed the classified service history printed before him. The paper bore top-tier clearance stamps from the Department of Defense, detailing combat deployments, non-attributable precision operations, and special tactical commendations that did not exist in public military databases.
He read another line—a specific operational codename linked to a legendary long-range engagement in the Hindu Kush mountains a decade prior.
Crawford slowly lifted his head. His neck felt stiff, his breathing suddenly shallow. He looked out across the sunny range toward Lane Twelve.
Tara Wells stood calmly beside her bench, holding her old precision rifle by its sling. She wasn't preparing her weapon or adjusting her sight. She was looking directly back at the review pavilion, her gray-green eyes locked onto Crawford with cold, total awareness. She knew exactly what was inside that folder.
The Senior Official leaned in close to Crawford, his voice barely a whisper against the distant roar of the wind machines.
“Sir... you need to see the name in that file,” the Senior Official said, his voice trembling slightly. “That’s not just a retired Master Sergeant. That’s the founder of the Advanced Marksmanship Instruction Group. She wrote the manual your entire rifle team uses.”
Crawford looked back down at the paper. Beneath the redacted operational history was her full service record—including a Distinguished Service Cross awarded in secret by the President of the United States.

Crawford looked back at Tara.
For the first time all day, the color drained completely from Rear Admiral Crawford’s face. The arrogance, the theatrical authority, and the disdain were gone, replaced by pure, genuine terror.
