Chapter 10 - UNBROKEN LEGACY

The afternoon sun began to dip beneath the Pacific horizon, painting the sky over Coronado in rich shades of gold and deep orange. The media crews swarmed the edge of Lane Twelve, desperate for an interview with the unsponsored veteran who had dismantled the navy’s elite shooting team and set a new range record.

Tara stood up, slinging her heavy, duct-taped rifle case over her shoulder. She picked up her folded registration paper—clean and dirt-free—and placed it neatly inside her pocket.

The Senior Range Official descended the pavilion stairs, holding the official winner’s check for three hundred thousand dollars and the championship trophy. He walked past the media line and stopped directly in front of Tara, standing at sharp military attention.

“Master Sergeant Wells,” the official said, his voice loud enough for the surrounding cameras to capture. “It is an honor to present you with the First Place Championship award. Your performance today will be studied in our sniper schools for decades.”

Tara took the check with a modest, polite nod. “Thank you, Colonel. I’m just glad the old rifle still holds zero.”

She didn't linger for the cameras, nor did she make a speech about her victory or Crawford’s public embarrassment. She had nothing to prove to anyone. She had come to do a job, executed it with absolute precision, and earned her prize through pure, unyielding merit.

With her battered case resting comfortably against her shoulder, Tara Wells turned and walked away from Lane Twelve, stepping smoothly through the parted crowd of applauding sailors and Marines.

As she walked toward the exit gates under the golden coastal light, Rear Admiral Crawford watched her from the shadows of the review pavilion, escorted away by military police. He had learned the hardest lesson a flag officer could learn on a military range: real authority isn't worn on a uniform—it is forged in silence, discipline, and absolute mastery.
