Chapter 4 - THE GHOST IN THE FRAME

Vanessa’s cheeks flushed dark red. The rejection, delivered in front of the house staff and the nanny she despised, hit her pride like a whip.
"I am trying to protect your legacy, Leo!" Vanessa snapped, her hands clenching into fists at her sides. "Claire has only been gone for three years! This woman is wearing a cheap uniform and trying to replace your wife!"
The name Claire hung in the golden Miami air like a physical weight.
Grace’s breath caught in her throat. She looked up from Noah, her hazel eyes drifting instinctively toward a mahogany side table three feet away.
Resting on the polished wood was a heavy silver-framed photograph. It showed a radiant, smiling woman with long dark hair holding a newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket—Claire Vance, holding Noah in the hospital room just hours before complications took her life.
Grace had cleaned that frame every single day for three years. She had spent nights sitting by Noah’s bed, telling him stories about the beautiful mother in the picture who loved him from heaven. She had never once tried to erase Claire; she had spent three years keeping Claire’s memory alive for a boy who was too young to remember her touch.
Leo didn't look at the photograph. He kept his eyes glued to Vanessa’s face.
He took another step forward, forcing Vanessa to take a sudden, involuntary step backward toward the marble fireplace.
"Claire died giving me my son," Leo said, his voice cold, steady, and razor-sharp. "And before she closed her eyes, the last thing she asked me was to make sure our boy was loved."
Vanessa froze, her lips parting as she realized she had crossed a line she couldn't retreat from.
Grace looked up at Leo, stunned by the absolute certainty in his voice. In the three years she had worked in the Vance estate, Leo had rarely spoken about his late wife. To hear him defend the love in the house using Claire’s final wish made Grace’s throat tighten with raw emotion.

Leo leaned down slightly, bringing his face close to Vanessa's.
"Claire wanted him loved," Leo repeated softly. "And Grace loves him."
