Chapter 8 - The Line in the Dust

Connie, still standing behind the counter with the heavy glass pitcher of water, slowly set it down on the stainless steel surface. Her hands were shaking violently. She reached under the counter with her right hand, her fingers finding the small, wooden handle of the emergency panic button installed beneath the register. She didn't press it yet, but her eyes darted between the dark figure at the door and the six armed, muscular men standing in her dining room.

The atmosphere inside the diner was stretched to its absolute breaking point.

The Mysterious Man took a second step forward into the room. He was now fully inside the diner, though his head remained angled away from the hanging overhead light, keeping his facial features obscured in dark silhouette.

"Let's not make a scene in front of the working class," the Mysterious Man said, gesturing vaguely toward Connie with a gloved finger. "Hand her over, and we can all pretend this lonely little stop never happened."

"Step over that line," Rhett warned, pointing a thick, tattooed finger toward the metal strip separating the entryway tile from the dining room carpet, "and you won't walk back out that door."

The five other bikers shifted instantly, spreading out in a tactical arc. One reached casually for the heavy metal chain hanging from his belt; another shifted his heavy boots, preparing to drop his shoulder into a tackle. They didn't care who the man was or what authority he claimed to possess. The rule of the road was absolute: a child asking for protection under the Iron Hollow patch received it, no matter the cost.

The Lead Biker slowly stood up.

He moved with deliberate, terrifying grace. As he rose to his full six-foot-four height, his massive shoulders completely blocked out the light from the back booth, burying Mara in absolute darkness. He stepped out of the booth, stepping past Rhett to stand at the very front of the line.

He was now three feet away from the Mysterious Man.

"She told me what you did," the Lead Biker said softly, his voice dropping into a register so dark it made the hair on the back of Rhett's neck stand up.

The Mysterious Man paused. For the first time, his calm composure flickered. His head tilted slightly upward, looking into the Lead Biker's eyes.

"She's a child," the man replied, his tone growing colder, sharper. "She imagines things."

"She didn't imagine a thing," the Lead Biker spat back, his fist tightening until his forearm tattoos bulged against his skin. "You have five seconds to turn around and get back on Route 81."
