Chapter 2 - The Silent Code

The transition was instant. Mara didn't just sit; she practically threw her small frame into the red vinyl booth, wedging herself into the corner between the Lead Biker’s broad shoulder and the tall back of the seat. She pulled her knees up against her chest, curling into a tight, defensive ball, trying to render herself as small and invisible as possible.
The Lead Biker shifted his position slightly, expanding his chest and angling his left arm outward so that his heavy leather vest formed a physical barrier, completely shielding Mara from any line of sight originating from the diner’s front windows.
Across the table, Rhett Mercer slowly lowered his heavy silver fork onto his plate. The clink of metal against porcelain was deliberate. Rhett didn't turn his head to look at the girl. Instead, he kept his eyes trained on the wide glass windows framing the front of the diner, monitoring the dusty parking lot outside through the sharp, clear reflection in the dark glass. His long, silver-streaked beard twitched slightly as his jaw set in a hard line.
The four other Iron Hollow Riders seated around the booth immediately stopped their conversations. The casual banter about highway routes and engine troubles evaporated into thin air. They were men trained by the road to read micro-shifts in tension, and every single one of them felt the sudden surge of adrenaline radiating from their road captain.
The Lead Biker leaned down, lowering his massive head toward Mara. The scent of motor oil, leather, and worn tobacco lingered around him, but his presence was entirely grounded, an immovable rock in the eye of a storm.
"What’s your name?" the Lead Biker asked, keeping his tone low and even, dropping his voice so it wouldn't carry across the room.
The little girl kept her cheek pressed against the rough leather of his vest, her hazel eyes darting across the table at the other large men.
"Mara," she whispered softly.

The Lead Biker opened his mouth to ask where her parents were, or where she had come from, but before the words could leave his throat, Mara acted.
She reached out with both hands, her small, pale fingers digging into the tough, heavy black leather of his vest. Her knuckles turned stark white from the shear force of her grip. She yanked him downward, pulling his ear directly against her mouth.
