Chapter 9 - THE REDIRECTION

High above the kitchen, in the floor-to-ceiling glass study overlooking the city, Daniel stood watching the black luxury sedan waiting in the courtyard below.

He watched as Marcus personally escorted Elena out the service door. She was no longer wearing her maid's uniform; she wore a heavy, brand-new cashmere winter coat that had been placed in her locker that morning, her faded blue lunch bag tucked safely inside a leather tote bag.

Marcus opened the rear door of the heated sedan for her. Elena looked up at the high windows of the mansion, her hazel eyes searching the glass as if trying to find the silent protector who had just transformed her life.

Daniel stepped back deeper into the shadows, remaining invisible.

He watched the car roll smoothly out of the courtyard and disappear down the sunlit, snow-covered avenue toward Lincoln Park.

A second later, the heavy oak door of his study opened.

Benny Santino—Daniel’s chief of security and top syndicate lieutenant—stepped into the room. Benny was thirty-nine, broad-shouldered, wearing a dark leather jacket over his suit, his face grim and sharp.

"The driver just confirmed she's on her way to the new house, boss," Benny reported smoothly. "The pediatric medical team you ordered for the old man and the little girl is already stationed at the Lincoln Park property. They'll have full home-care setups by noon."

"Good," Daniel said, his voice flat, cold, and razor-sharp.

Benny hesitated, taking a step closer to the desk, his brow furrowed in deep confusion.

"Daniel... I have to ask," Benny murmured quietly. "We've spent three years searching for the missing ledger entries from your father's estate. Marcus told me you followed her last night because you thought she was skimming. Why the house? Why the money? Who is she?"

Daniel turned around slowly to face his lieutenant.

His dark eyes were devoid of emotion, hard as diamond, cold as the Chicago winter outside.

"She isn't a maid, Benny," Daniel said softly.

Benny frowned. "Then what is she?"

Daniel reached down, picked up his father’s old velvet binder from the desk, and tossed it across the wood into Benny's hands.

"She's the reason my father was killed," Daniel revealed, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register. "And the men who drove her family into the dirt think they got away with it eighteen years ago."

Benny opened the binder, his eyes scanning the old photographs and legal documents. His face went completely pale as he realized the catastrophic, explosive implications of what he was reading.

"My God..." Benny whispered, looking up at Daniel. "The Moretti family... they were the ones who set up her father."

"They took her family's name," Daniel said, his voice laced with pure, absolute lethal intent. "They took her child's future. And they let her starve in my kitchen while they ate off golden plates."
