Chapter 7 - THE LEDGER OF BLOOD

The blizzard reached its peak as Daniel walked back to his black G-Wagon, his heavy boots crushing the snow with slow, deliberate weight.

He didn't drive home to his Gold Coast mansion.

Forty minutes later, the heavy iron gates of the Carter family's private suburban estate—the old, fortress-like manor his father had built in the 1980s—swung open in the storm. The house had been locked and preserved as a private security sanctuary since his father's death eight years ago.

Daniel walked into the cold, silent study, ignoring the dust covers draped over the leather furniture.

He walked straight to the floor-to-ceiling bookshelf, pulled a heavy brass replica of the Chicago skyline, and triggered the hydraulic release. The hidden steel safe behind the wall hissed open with a dull electronic chime.

Daniel reached inside.

He bypassed the stacks of hundred-dollar bills, the unregistered firearms, and the encrypted flash drives. His hand went straight to the very back of the safe, pulling out a faded, velvet-lined leather binder that hadn't been opened in nearly a decade.

He sat down at his father's heavy mahogany desk, flicked on a single desk lamp, and opened the binder.

There was the photograph.

It was crisp, yellowed at the edges. The newborn baby girl in the picture had the exact same crescent-shaped line above her left eyebrow—a rare physical genetic anomaly passed down through the Carter bloodline for three generations.

Behind the photograph was a thick stack of medical records, legal adoption forms, and handwritten journal entries written in his father’s jagged cursive script.

Daniel began to read.

As his eyes scanned the yellowed pages, the dark, monstrous truth of his family's history was laid bare in front of him.

Twenty-eight years ago, his father, Arthur Carter, had conducted a brutal purge of his own internal ranks, executing his top lieutenant, Victor Martinez, on suspicion of treason. But Arthur had discovered too late that Victor was innocent—and that Victor’s young wife had died giving birth to a daughter in a charity hospital three weeks later.

Overcome by a rare moment of guilt, Arthur Carter had secretly funded the baby girl’s upbringing through a front foundation, naming her Elena Martinez. But eight years ago, when Arthur himself was assassinated by rival syndicates, his secret support network vanished.

Elena was left alone in the world, unaware of who her real father was, raising her younger half-sister—Sofia—whom Arthur had secretly fathered with Victor's surviving widow shortly before his death.

Sofia wasn't just a distant relative. She was Daniel's half-sister.

And Elena wasn't a random housemaid who had applied for a job at his mansion three years ago. She had taken the job at the Carter estate deliberately, searching for answers about the mysterious foundation that had suddenly stopped supporting her family eight years ago.

Daniel closed the velvet binder with a soft, heavy thud.

He leaned his head back against the leather chair, staring up at the dark ceiling as tears of pure, unbearable grief and rage filled his eyes.

"She wasn't stealing from me," Daniel whispered to the empty room, his voice shaking with a terrifying, lethal wrath. "She was trying to survive what my father did to her."
