Chapter 4 - THE FLASH OF TRUTH

As Lorenzo looked down at Elena, a rapid sequence of memories—fragments of surveillance footage he had watched over the past three weeks without a second thought—flashed through his mind with crystal, mathematical clarity.

He remembered seeing her standing alone in the basement laundry room at eleven o'clock at night, pressing thirty sheets an hour to earn an extra twenty dollars of overtime.

He remembered seeing her sitting on a plastic crate in the boiler room during her fifteen-minute lunch break, opening a small plastic container that held nothing but a bottle of water and two crackers, while she carefully wrapped half a turkey sandwich into a napkin to carry out in her coat pocket.

He remembered seeing the small, beaten-up '08 Honda Civic parked in the far corner of the staff lot—a car with a cracked rear window taped over with plastic, inside of which a small pink blanket and a stuffed rabbit sat on the back seat.

She wasn't a thief. She wasn't skimming from his estate or feeding a habit.

She was a mother starving herself in secret so her child could survive another day in the freezing Chicago cold.

Lorenzo felt a sudden, violent shift in his chest—a sharp, heavy spike of genuine emotion cutting through the cold, cynical armor he had worn for fifteen years as head of the Chicago underground. He lived in a world where men killed for territory, bought politicians for millions, and threw away thousands on single dinners—yet twenty feet from his private dining room, a woman working in his own house was starving to feed her daughter.

Lorenzo turned his head slowly toward the security guard.

"Give her the bread," Lorenzo commanded, his baritone dropping into a low, smooth register that left zero room for hesitation.

The guard didn't wait a second. He immediately stepped forward, dropped to one knee, and gently handed the warm golden dinner roll back to Sophie.

Sophie pulled the roll against her chest, holding it right beside her stuffed rabbit, her small blue eyes looking from the guard back up to the giant man in the black suit with wide, bewildered wonder.
