Chapter 11 - THE NEW SUNRISE

The next morning, a bright, crisp winter sun broke through the gray clouds over Lake Michigan, painting the Gold Coast in brilliant shades of silver and gold.
In the sunlit garden suite of the Moretti estate, Elena Carter woke up in a massive, soft king-sized bed wrapped in Egyptian cotton sheets.
She sat up slowly, her body rested for the first time in two years. Beside her, three-year-old Sophie was sleeping soundly, clutching her gray stuffed rabbit, her small face warm, rosy, and peaceful.
A quiet knock sounded at the suite door.
Elena pulled on a plush white robe resting on the chair and opened the door.
Standing in the hallway was Marco, holding a leather folder and a set of brass keys.
"Good morning, Miss Carter," Marco said respectfully, offering a low bow. "Don Lorenzo asked me to hand these to you."
Elena looked at the keys, then at the folder. "What is this?"
"The deed to a three-bedroom townhouse two blocks from the estate," Marco explained smoothly. "Fully furnished, fully secured, and paid in full. Also, your nursing license reinstatement paperwork has been cleared through the state board. Don Lorenzo’s legal team processed it overnight."
Elena stared at the keys in her hand, tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilling over her lashes as she covered her mouth with both hands.
"And... Mr. Moretti?" Elena sobbed softly. "Where is he?"
Marco smiled faintly, pointing toward the main floor garden terrace. "He's waiting for you and Sophie in the breakfast room."
Ten minutes later, Elena walked into the sunlit conservatory, holding little Sophie’s hand.
Lorenzo Moretti sat at the head of a long marble table set with fresh fruit, warm pastries, and coffee. He wore a simple black cashmere sweater, his sharp features softened by the warm morning light.
As Sophie saw him, she let go of her mother’s hand, ran across the room on her little feet, and held out a small, freshly baked croissant toward the giant crime boss.
"For you, Mr. Lorenzo!" Sophie beamed, her wide blue eyes sparkling with pure happiness.
Lorenzo looked at the little girl, a genuine, warm smile breaking across his handsome face. He reached down, took the croissant from her tiny hands, and lifted her smoothly onto the chair beside him.
He looked up at Elena, who stood in the doorway, her eyes shining with light, peace, and a future restored.

"Sit down, Elena," Lorenzo said softly, pointing to the chair at his right. "Your breakfast is getting cold."
Elena walked forward, taking her seat beside her daughter and the man who had brought light into their darkest shadow—knowing that as long as they lived beneath his broad shadow, they would never have to hide food, or be afraid, ever again.
