Chapter 2 - THE PANTRY IN THE SHADOWS

Forty-eight hours later, a heavy, freezing rain lashed against the arched glass windows of the estate’s ground-floor kitchen corridor. The corridor was a grand, vaulted hall of polished white marble, dark walnut wainscoting, and warm recessed amber lighting that reflected off antique copper cookware hanging along the service walls.
Near the heavy carved doors of the walk-in pantry, three-year-old Sophie Carter cowered behind a tall brass linen hamper.
Sophie was small, fragile, and pale, with long, fine light-brown hair framing a small face dominated by wide, expressive blue eyes. She wore a simple, faded pink floral dress that had been mended at the hem, dark tights with small holes at the knees, and clutched a worn, gray stuffed rabbit with a missing button eye tightly against her chest.
In her tiny hands, she held a fresh, golden-brown dinner roll—crusty on the outside, warm on the inside—that she had found resting on a cooling rack near the pantry door.
Suddenly, a heavy leather boot slammed onto the marble floor beside the hamper.
"Hey! What are you doing back here?!" a rough voice barked.
The estate guard stepped out from the pantry archway, reaching down with a swift, heavy hand. He snatched the warm dinner roll straight out of Sophie’s small fingers.
"You can't be in this wing, kid," the guard grunted, holding the roll out of her reach. "And you definitely don't touch the kitchen prep."
Sophie pressed her back against the brass hamper, her small chest heaving as she squeezed her stuffed rabbit against her chin. Her bottom lip trembled, and big, hot tears filled her wide blue eyes, spilling over her pale cheeks in quiet terror.
"Hey! What’s going on here?"
A deep, commanding voice echoed down the marble corridor, cutting through the hum of the kitchen refrigeration units.
Lorenzo Moretti stepped out from the grand dining room entrance, his heavy black overcoat draped open, his dark eyes locked onto the scene. Behind him, two senior lieutenants stopped in their tracks, their hands folded neatly in front of their dark suits.
The guard immediately straightened his posture, holding up the golden roll. "She stole it, boss. Found her lurking by the pastry station. I was just taking her down to the service office to find her mother."

Sophie froze as Lorenzo approached. She looked up at the towering man in the black suit—at his sharp jawline, his dark hair, and the intricate tattoos creeping up his neck. To a three-year-old girl, he looked like a giant from a dark storybook.
Her little hands tightened around her rabbit until her knuckles turned white, but she didn't run.
