Chapter 8 - The Crucible of Contact

The wind died completely, leaving the combat pit in a dome of suffocating, stagnant heat.
Marcus launched his most complex assault of the match. He took a stutter-step forward, shifting his lead foot to change from an orthodox to a southpaw stance in mid-stride. The sudden shift inverted the angles of attack, turning his left hand into his rear power strike.
He drove a powerful palm strike down the center line, aimed directly through the gap in Olivia’s guard.
Olivia adapted in real time. Rather than retreating straight back—which would have played directly into his reach advantage—she stepped hard to her right, moving toward his power side but inside the arc of his arm. It was a high-risk, high-reward tactical gamble.
She caught his wrist with an inverted parry, pulling his momentum forward while simultaneously driving her forearm across his collarbone in a violent, non-lethal wedge.
Marcus felt his balance tilt forward. For a split second, he was overextended.
The crowd gasped—a collective inhalation of forty people that sounded like canvas ripping in the wind.
Marcus reacted with phenomenal athleticism. Instead of fighting the pull and tripping over his own lead foot, he threw his rear leg back, sprawling his weight out to lower his center of gravity. He dropped into a stable three-point stance, his left hand bracing against the dirt while his right arm locked around Olivia’s waist to prevent her from executing a sweep.
The impact threw up a blinding cloud of fine red dust that enveloped both of them up to their knees.
Olivia felt his massive arm clamp around her waist like a steel band. Knowing that allowing Marcus to establish a clinch would lead to an immediate takedown, she hammered her forearm down across the crook of his elbow, breaking the grip’s leverage, and shoved his shoulder away with her palm.

They broke apart violently, both stumbling back two paces into the cloud of dust they had created.
Their boots slid across the dirt, leaving long, dragged furrows in the earth. Both regained their feet within the same fraction of a second, rising into their guards with identical speed, their eyes burning through the settling haze of clay.
