Chapter 5 - The Cadence of War

There was no pause for breath. The engagement resumed with the cadence of an automatic weapon firing single, deliberate shots.
Marcus drove forward. Olivia deflected.
Olivia counter-punched with a straight left. Marcus slipped his head to the outside, parried her forearm down, and drove a controlled palm into her flank.
Olivia pivoted her hips before the strike could penetrate, catching the force along the thick musculature of her latissimus dorsi, and immediately ripped an open-hand hook around his guard.
Marcus caught the blow on the meat of his shoulder, wincing slightly as the speed of the impact stung through his uniform.
They were moving in a tight, circular pattern now, carving trenches into the dirt with the soles of their boots. Every movement was stripped of wasted motion. There were no wide swings, no dramatic flourishes, no theatrical grunts. It was the lethal, economical choreography of modern hand-to-hand combat: close-range hand-fighting, checks, frames, inside ties, and angle shifts.
Marcus changed the angle again, stepping deep across Olivia’s lead foot to cut off her escape route. He fired a double strike—left hand checking her guard, right hand following immediately behind.
Olivia read the sequence before it matured. She dropped three inches, ducked under the left check, and drove her shoulder directly into Marcus’s chest, offsetting his balance. Marcus grunted, his feet scrambling in the loose soil to re-establish his base as Olivia circled to his rear.
Before she could take his back, Marcus whipped around with surprising agility for a man of his size, throwing his forearm out in a wide clothesline motion that kept her from closing the gap. Olivia ducked back, her boots sliding along the clay, kicking up a rooster-tail of dry earth.
Around them, the spectators were frozen. An instructor holding a clipboard had stopped writing; his pen hovered motionless over the paper. The soldiers in the front row had leaned in so far their shadows touched the outer perimeter of the sparring area.

The soundscape was entirely physical: the rhythmic scraping of combat boots against hard-packed earth, the sharp, percussive slaps of skin against uniform fabric, and the controlled, synchronized breathing of two elite operators pushing each other to the absolute edge of their technical capabilities.
Every sequence ended in a draw. Every attack was met with an answer. Every block was followed by a counter that was, in turn, neutralized before it could become decisive.
