Chapter 4 - Pressure and Retreat

The circle of soldiers had tightened by half a pace without anyone consciously giving an order. The perimeter was now a dense wall of camouflage and focused faces, all attention drawn to the two figures in the center.

The pace of the drill was no longer exploratory. The warm-up phase had burned off, leaving the pure, competitive reality of tactical sparring.

Olivia went on the hunt. She advanced with deliberate, predatory intent, closing the distance that Marcus had established. Her footsteps were rapid, short, and unrelenting—shuffle-steps that preserved her balance while continually eating up the neutral zone of the mat.

Marcus stood his ground, raising his hands, but Olivia’s forward momentum carried genuine tactical threat. She threw a probing jab toward his forehead, followed instantly by a driving palm strike aimed at his solar plexus. The combination was delivered in a rapid one-two cadence that forced Marcus onto his back foot.

Marcus took a half-step back. His heel kicked up a cloud of ochre dust.

To the observers, a retreat of six inches might have looked insignificant, but on the combatives mat, giving ground was an admission of pressure. Marcus felt his weight tilt toward his back heel for a fraction of a second—a dangerous compromise of posture.

Recognizing his vulnerability, Marcus didn't try to backpedal further. He planted his rear boot firmly into the dirt, dug his toes in, and used the bedrock beneath the dust to launch an immediate, measured counter. He thrust his right arm out, intercepting Olivia’s advancing shoulder with an open palm check, arresting her momentum dead in its tracks.

The collision of their bodies was visceral—fabric catching against fabric, boots scraping hard against the gravel beneath the soil. Olivia’s advance was stopped cold, but Marcus had been forced to expend significant energy just to halt her forward drive.

Neither had secured dominance. Marcus held her shoulder in check, but Olivia’s other hand was already framed against his bicep, neutralizing any follow-up strike he could launch. They were locked in an isometric stalemate, muscles strained, the breath whistling through their teeth.

For two full seconds, the two non-commissioned officers pushed against each other's base, testing who would yield first. Realizing that brute force favored Marcus, Olivia disengaged cleanly, breaking the frame and hopping back half a yard into clear space. Marcus dropped his arm, reset his footing, and squared up.

The dust swirled around their shins, kicked up by their boots, hanging golden in the fierce afternoon light.
