Chapter 3 - SARAH'S BROTHER

Ryan stopped behaving like a man trying to escape once Claire separated him from Noah.

That did not make him cooperative.

It made him careful.

Claire did not interview him herself.

She had already been physically involved with him.

State Investigator Julia Mercer arrived before dark and took over the roadside statement.

Claire watched through body-camera review later.

Ryan's full name:

Ryan Thomas Cole.

Sarah Carter's older brother.

Sarah's maiden name:

Cole.

Their father, Thomas Cole, had founded Cole Recovery & Land Services.

Towing.

Property cleanouts.

Storm cleanup.

Private repossession support.

County contracts going back twenty years.

Thomas died eight years earlier after his truck went off a mountain road during a winter storm.

Ryan inherited the company.

Sarah inherited half the cabin.

Then married Daniel Carter.

Daniel died four years ago from cancer.

Noah was six.

Ryan had become the nearest male relative in Noah's life.

That mattered.

It did not give him authority to drag the child anywhere.

Mercer asked:

“Why were you chasing Noah?”

Ryan looked exhausted.

“Because he ran into the road.”

“You drove behind him.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Maybe three minutes.”

“Why not stop and call 911?”

“I was trying to catch him before he got to County Road 18.”

“You then told Sheriff Bennett to give you the boy.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was angry.”

“Why did you grab the sheriff?”

Ryan stared at the table.

“I lost my temper.”

There.

No invented self-defense.

Then Mercer asked about Sarah.

“When did you last see your sister?”

“Today.”

“Where?”

“The cabin.”

“What time?”

“About four.”

“What happened?”

“She was arguing with somebody.”

“Who?”

Ryan hesitated.

“Mark Holloway.”

Claire stopped the recording.

Ortiz looked at her.

“Mark.”

Claire nodded.

Former reserve deputy.

She remembered him now.

Forty-six.

Worked nights for the sheriff's office ten years earlier.

Left after failing annual firearms qualification and taking a private-security job.

Not disgraced.

Not criminal.

Just gone.

Ryan's interview continued.

Mercer:

“What was Holloway doing there?”

Ryan:

“I don't know exactly.”

“You drove sixty miles into the mountains and don't know?”

“My sister texted me last night.”

Ryan's phone had already been preserved.

He gave consent to show one thread.

Sarah:

I'm taking Noah to Dad's cabin tomorrow. Don't follow me.

Ryan:

What are you doing?

Sarah:

Finishing this.

Ryan:

Don't involve Noah.

Sarah:

I have no one overnight. We'll be gone before dark.

Ryan:

Sarah, please don't meet Mark alone.

There.

Claire read it twice.

Sarah had planned to meet Mark.

Ryan knew.

Then another message from that afternoon.

2:31 p.m.

Ryan:

If Noah gets scared keep him away from the road. I'm serious.

Sarah:

Then don't come.

Mercer asked:

“Why did you think Noah might run?”

Ryan looked down.

“Because Sarah told me Mark was bringing the old sheriff SUV.”

Claire leaned closer to the recording.

Mercer did too.

“What sheriff SUV?”

Ryan rubbed both hands over his face.

“A surplus Tahoe.”

“Whose?”

“My company's.”

“Marked?”

“It wasn't supposed to be.”

“What does that mean?”

Ryan stopped.

Then:

“It used to be Unit 12.”

Claire sat back.

Her Unit 12.

Not the current vehicle.

The one she had driven for six years before the county replaced it.

Mercer asked:

“Why would Holloway bring it to the cabin?”

“Sarah wanted pictures.”

“Of what?”

Ryan shook his head.

“Ask her.”

“We can't find her.”

That finally broke some of Ryan's control.

He looked up.

“What?”

“You told Sheriff Bennett there was no woman at the cabin.”

“I searched the first floor.”

“When?”

“After Mark's SUV left the first time.”

Claire looked at Ortiz.

First time.

Ryan continued.

“I got there. Sarah and Mark were yelling inside. Noah was outside by the woods. I went in. Mark walked out. Sarah told me to get away from her.”

“What did you do?”

“I followed Mark outside.”

“Why?”

“I wanted the drive.”

“What drive?”

Ryan stopped again.

Then his lawyer ended the voluntary interview.

But the last thirty seconds had already changed the case.

Ryan had not randomly stumbled onto his frightened nephew.

Sarah had deliberately arranged a meeting with a former deputy.

The old Unit 12 was part of it.

And whatever was on the missing drive mattered enough that both siblings had come to the mountain trying to control who got it.
