Chapter 1 - TWO UNIT 12s

Sheriff Claire Bennett saw the boy less than a second before she hit the brakes.

He burst through the pine trees on her right and ran directly into the dirt road.

Ten years old, maybe.

Blue sweatshirt.

One shoe partially untied.

Blood on one knee.

He looked behind himself instead of toward traffic.

Claire slammed both feet into the brake pedal.

Her patrol SUV fishtailed through loose gravel.

Dust exploded around the hood.

The boy finally saw her.

He threw both arms up.

Claire stopped less than six feet away.

The boy stumbled backward and fell hard onto the road.

Claire was out before the dust settled.

“Hey. Don't move.”

The boy scrambled backward anyway.

“I'm not going to hurt you.”

She kept her hands visible.

Sheriff's uniform.

Badge.

Body camera already recording.

“What's your name?”

“Noah.”

“Noah what?”

“Carter.”

A vehicle roared around the bend behind them.

Claire turned.

Dark pickup.

Too fast.

The driver hit the brakes.

The pickup stopped crooked across the road.

Driver's door flew open.

A man jumped out.

Thirty-eight or so.

Work jacket.

Mud-covered boots.

Angry before his feet hit the ground.

“Give me the boy.”

Claire immediately stepped between them.

“No.”

Ryan Cole came straight at her.

“That's my family.”

“Then stop running at him.”

Ryan reached Claire and grabbed her shoulder.

He shoved.

Hard.

Claire stumbled sideways into the open patrol-SUV door.

Metal hit her back.

Noah cried out.

Claire pushed herself off the door.

Ryan reached again.

She knocked his hand away.

Then shoved him with both hands.

Ryan staggered backward.

His lower back slammed against the pickup hood.

Noah moved behind Claire.

He pointed up the mountain road.

“My mom's still at the cabin.”

Claire turned her head.

“What cabin?”

“The old one. Up there.”

Ryan pushed himself off the hood.

“No.”

Claire looked at him.

“What?”

Ryan charged back.

He reached around her for Noah.

Claire caught his arm.

Turned.

Drove it behind him.

Ryan hit the pickup hood chest-first.

“Stop fighting me.”

“Let me go.”

“Then stop reaching for the kid.”

Ryan twisted against her grip.

His face turned toward hers.

“There’s no woman there.”

Claire paused.

Behind her, Noah heard him.

The boy's expression changed.

Not confusion.

Shock.

“My mom was there.”

Ryan closed his eyes for half a second.

That was enough.

Claire tightened her hold.

“What do you mean there’s no woman?”

Ryan suddenly jerked his arm down.

Claire lost the wrist.

He spun away and ran toward the driver's door.

Claire followed.

Before Ryan reached the handle—

sirens.

Two patrol SUVs came around the bend.

Chief Deputy Lena Ortiz in the lead.

Both vehicles braked sideways across the road and blocked Ryan's pickup.

Dust swallowed everything.

Deputies got out.

“Hands!”

Ryan stopped.

Two deputies took him against the pickup.

Claire turned back toward Noah.

He was shaking.

“Is your mother hurt?”

“I don't know.”

“When did you see her?”

“Before I ran.”

“Was somebody with her?”

Noah looked at Ryan.

Claire saw it.

She crouched.

“Don't answer anything else right now.”

Good.

He was ten.

Not a field witness she was going to interrogate while terrified.

She opened the rear passenger door of her SUV.

“You ride with me.”

Ryan twisted in the deputies' grip.

“Claire, don't take him up there.”

That was the first time he used her name.

Claire looked at him.

“How do you know who I am?”

Ryan said nothing.

She helped Noah into the SUV.

Buckled him.

Closed the door.

Then went to Ortiz.

“Secure him. Separate every witness. State police if this turns into family-custody nonsense.”

Ortiz glanced toward Noah.

“And you?”

“Cabin.”

“Wait for me.”

“Kid says his mother is there.”

Ortiz understood.

“I'm behind you.”

Claire got back into Unit 12.

Noah pointed at every fork.

Right.

Then left at an old logging gate.

Up a steep gravel road where the pines grew close enough to scrape both mirrors.

Five minutes later the cabin appeared.

Old timber.

Two stories.

Metal roof.

No vehicle in front.

No person outside.

Claire stopped twenty yards from the porch.

“Stay in the SUV.”

Noah grabbed her sleeve.

“Don't leave me.”

Claire looked at the silent house.

Then at him.

“I won't go inside until backup gets here.”

She stepped out.

Noah climbed out too before she could stop him.

Claire almost ordered him back.

Then saw the way he stared at the cabin.

“Stay beside me.”

The dust from her arrival drifted across the clearing.

Nothing moved.

Then—

an engine.

Behind the cabin.

Claire turned.

A second sheriff patrol SUV slowly emerged from the narrow service road.

Same dark body.

Same county markings.

Same light bar.

Same white door star.

And on the front quarter panel—

12.

Claire looked beside herself.

Her own Unit 12 remained parked ten feet away.

Both vehicles were visible at once.

The second SUV stopped.

Its windshield reflected the late-afternoon sky.

Claire could not see the driver.

Noah grabbed her arm.

Claire reached for her radio.

Before she could speak, dispatch crackled through.

“Unit 12…”

A pause.

Then the dispatcher's voice changed.

“Why are there two of you?”
