Chapter 10 - MARK COMES IN

Mark Holloway surrendered on day six.

No forest manhunt ending in gunfire.

His attorney called state police.

They met at a county courthouse two hours away.

Mark walked in.

Hands visible.

No weapon.

Claire saw only the booking photograph.

He looked older than she remembered.

State prosecutors charged him initially with criminal impersonation, unlawful restraint, evidence interference, and related offenses.

Charging was not conviction.

His lawyer disputed unlawful restraint.

Then Mark gave a proffer.

Sarah contacted him first.

That was true.

She offered $5,000 for records.

He agreed.

She specifically requested old Unit 12.

Why?

“To prove to Claire the county had a copy running around.”

Mark brought it.

Who installed the full markings?

Mark.

“When?”

Eight months earlier for Bedford.

Then again before the cabin because he had removed two door magnets after Bedford.

“Did Sarah tell you to reinstall them?”

“She said bring it like Bedford.”

His interpretation.

Her wording.

Both now in evidence.

Then Ryan contacted him.

Ryan offered $10,000.

Not to hurt Sarah.

To recover the blue drive and keep her at the cabin until he arrived.

Mark accepted both deals.

Sarah thought he was selling Ryan out.

Ryan thought he was retrieving company property.

Mark planned to get paid twice.

That was his motive.

Small enough to be believable.

Then the fake transport form.

Mark created it.

Used Sarah's old login because the workstation autofilled it.

He copied Claire's name from a real civil-response memo.

Why?

“To scare Sarah into waiting.”

“Did you intend to take her to the crisis center?”

“No.”

“Then why write it?”

“Because she trusts paperwork more than people.”

That sentence ended any sympathy in the room.

The old reserve jacket?

His.

He had been instructed to return it when he resigned.

He claimed he forgot.

County property records showed no follow-up.

Another failure.

Then the biggest question.

“Why take Sarah's phone?”

“So she wouldn't call Claire before Ryan got there.”

“Why block the door?”

“Same reason.”

There.

Unlawful restraint argument got stronger.

Mark insisted Sarah could have left through the back.

She did.

That did not help much.

Then:

“Did you injure her?”

“She cut herself on the window.”

Evidence supported that.

No beating.

No weapon.

The event was ugly enough without inventing one.

Then Mark described Ryan arriving.

Ryan said:

“Not with Noah here.”

Mark claimed Ryan meant:

Do not discuss the drive where Noah could hear.

Sarah thought he meant:

Do not restrain her in front of Noah.

Both interpretations remained possible.

Then Mark dropped another fact.

Sarah had not intended to turn the blue drive directly over to law enforcement.

Not at first.

She had arranged to meet someone else after Mark.

A journalist?

No.

A lawyer?

No.

Mark said:

“She was selling it back.”

Julia stared.

“To Ryan?”

“No.”

“Who?”

Mark smiled once.

Not because it was funny.

Because everyone in the case had misunderstood the same transaction.

“Cole Recovery's insurance carrier.”

Sarah had contacted the company's liability insurer.

She wanted them to force an independent audit before Ryan destroyed the business.

Not burn him publicly.

Not yet.

That reframed her motives.

Then Mark added:

“She told me she didn't want Ryan arrested.”

Julia asked:

“Why?”

“He's Noah's uncle.”

There.

Family again.

Sarah wanted enough pressure to stop Ryan.

Not enough to destroy him.

Then Ryan escalated.

May you like

Mark escalated further.

And Noah ran into the road.
