Chapter 6 - I Told Mara To Use Her Own Name

I found her in the loading alley.
Not because I chased her.
Because she called the restaurant from the employee phone beside the delivery entrance.
Helen answered.
Mara asked for me.
I took the receiver.
“Claire?”
Female voice.
Low.
Careful.
“You know my name.”
“I know.”
“Use yours.”
Silence.
Then:
“Mara.”
Daniel started toward me.
I held up one hand.
“No.”
He stopped.
Barely.
I turned slightly away.
“You stole my uniform.”
“Yes.”
“My name badge.”
“Yes.”
“Used my employee code.”
“Yes.”
“Met an eight-year-old child under my name.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
She took a breath.
“I needed him not to say ‘Mara’ before I could talk to him.”
“That is not an answer.”
“No.”
She corrected herself.
“I was afraid Daniel would hear my name and take Noah out of the restaurant before I knew whether Noah even knew I existed.”
“You could have asked his parents.”
“I did.”
“And they said no.”
“Yes.”
“Then you used my identity to go around the no.”
Silence.
“Yes.”
At least she wasn't building a noble version.
“Where are you?”
“Loading alley.”
I looked through the back door window.
A woman stood near the delivery gate.
Brown hair.
Gray coat over a white restaurant shirt.
Forty-one looked right.
“Come through the front.”
She hesitated.
“Claire.”
“Front.”
“What if Daniel—”
“That's your problem.”
Another silence.
Then:
“Okay.”
She hung up.
Daniel stared.
“You're letting her in?”
“I am not letting anyone through a locked staff door.”
“She needs to leave.”
“She needs to return what she took.”
“I'll deal with her.”
“No.”
His face hardened.
“Excuse me?”
“You grabbed me hard enough to bruise my shoulder because your son hugged me.”
Daniel looked down.
There.
“I’m sorry.”
“Later.”
He stopped.
“I'm not helping you turn a restaurant hallway into another family ambush.”
Katherine came over.
“What did Mara say?”
“That she's coming through the front.”
Daniel laughed without humor.
“Of course.”
Five minutes later, the host doors opened.
Mara walked in.
No disguise now.
Gray coat open.
White shirt underneath.
My black vest folded over one arm.
Helen's eyes narrowed.
Luis stopped polishing a glass.
Daniel did not move.
Mara saw him.
Seven years fit inside the distance between them.
No hug.
No shout.
Just recognition.
Then Noah slipped out of Katherine's hand.
Daniel said:
“Noah.”
He stopped.
That was important.
He stopped himself.
Noah stared at Mara.
She stayed where she was.
“Is that her?”
I asked him.
He looked carefully.
Not at the badge.
Her face.
“Yes.”
Mara's eyes filled.
Noah looked at her coat.
“Your name isn't Claire.”
“No.”
“What is it?”
“Mara.”
He glanced at Daniel.
“My aunt.”
Mara swallowed.
“Yes.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
Noah asked:
“Why did you lie?”
Mara looked at me first.
Wrong.
She caught herself.
Then looked at him.
“Because I wanted to meet you after your parents said I couldn't.”
Noah frowned.
“That’s bad.”
A few diners nearby pretended to study menus.
Mara nodded.
“Yes.”
“Did you think Dad would get mad?”
“Yes.”
“Was he?”
She almost smiled.
“Very.”
Daniel didn't.
Noah continued:
“Did you take me when I was a baby?”
Mara looked toward Katherine.
Then Daniel.
Noah noticed.
“Don't do that.”
Mara looked back at him.
“Your mom asked me to pick you up.”
Katherine’s eyes filled.
Mara continued:
“I should have told your dad where you were.”
Daniel looked at her.
That answer surprised him.
“Why didn't you?”
Mara turned toward him for the first time.
“Because Katherine asked me not to.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Mara shook her head.
“You know that part.”
Daniel's face changed.
“There’s another part?”
Mara looked at Noah.
Then at me.
“Not here.”
Noah groaned.
“Everybody says that.”
Mara almost laughed.
Then she said:
“The part I'm not saying is adult business. Not because you can't handle truth. Because it doesn't belong on your shoulders.”
That was the first adult sentence all day that seemed designed to reduce Noah’s burden rather than increase it.
Daniel heard that too.
He looked away.
Helen walked up.
“Mara Hayes?”
“Yes.”
“You stole property from my staff area.”
“Yes.”
“You entered restricted corridors.”
“Yes.”
“You used another employee’s credential.”
“Yes.”
Helen pointed toward the host stand.
“You and I are talking before anybody else.”
Mara nodded.
Daniel looked irritated.
I almost enjoyed it.
Then Mara took my folded vest and held it toward me.
I did not take it.
“Put it on Helen’s desk.”
She nodded.
As she turned away, Daniel said:
“Mara.”
She stopped.
“What?”
He stared at her.
“You told Noah I locked you outside.”
Her face changed.
“I didn't.”
Daniel looked at Noah.
Noah frowned.
“The lady said it.”
Mara stared at him.
“What lady?”
The room shifted.
I felt it.
“You,” Daniel said.
Noah shook his head.
“No.”
He pointed toward Mara.
“She told me about Aunt Mara.”
Daniel went still.
I crouched.
“Noah, the woman who wore my badge was Mara.”
He shook his head harder.
“No.”
Mara stared at him.
“I met you twice.”
“Yes.”
“Then—”
“You didn't say Dad locked you outside.”
Every adult stopped.
Noah looked frightened now.
“The other lady did.”
Mara's face drained.
“What other lady?”
Noah pointed toward the kitchen glass.
“The one who was with you the first time.”
The reflection at the end of the video had not been Mara alone.
May you like
There had been someone else inside that corridor.
Someone even Mara had not expected Noah to mention.
