Chapter 4 - Katherine Said Mara Did Not Take Noah

Daniel called Katherine from the private room.

Speakerphone.

He hated doing it.

Noah insisted.

I suggested he take the conversation somewhere else.

Noah said:

“No. People keep doing that.”

I had no argument.

Katherine answered on the third ring.

“What happened?”

Daniel said:

“Mara may be back.”

Silence.

Long enough that Noah looked at the phone.

“Katherine.”

“I heard you.”

No surprise.

Daniel caught it.

“You knew?”

“No.”

“Then why aren't you asking what I mean?”

Katherine exhaled.

“Because she emailed me two months ago.”

Daniel stood.

“What?”

Noah looked at his father.

I watched Daniel physically stop himself from taking the phone off speaker.

Progress measured in inches.

“What did she want?”

Katherine said:

“To know if Noah was okay.”

Daniel laughed once.

“After seven years.”

“Yes.”

“And you answered.”

“Yes.”

“What did you say?”

“That he was fine.”

“Anything else?”

“No.”

Noah leaned toward the phone.

“Mom?”

Her voice changed instantly.

“Honey.”

“Did Aunt Mara take me?”

Silence.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Katherine said:

“No.”

Noah stared at his father.

Daniel did not move.

Katherine continued:

“I asked Mara to pick you up.”

Daniel's jaw tightened even though he already knew enough of that.

Noah asked:

“Why?”

“You were a baby. Your dad and I were having a terrible week.”

Daniel looked away.

Katherine continued carefully.

“I didn't want to argue with your dad in front of you.”

Daniel said:

“I wasn't home.”

“You were coming home.”

“Different.”

“Yes.”

She accepted that.

“I asked Mara to pick Noah up from day care and keep him for the evening.”

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“You told her not to tell me where.”

“Yes.”

Noah looked confused.

“Why?”

Katherine took time.

“Because I thought your dad would come over and we would keep fighting.”

Daniel said:

“You treated me like I was dangerous.”

“No.”

“You wouldn't tell me where my child was.”

“I was angry.”

“That doesn't—”

“I know.”

She stopped him.

“I know now.”

No long defense.

Then Katherine said:

“I should have told you where he was.”

Daniel stared at the phone.

“What did Mara do?”

“She followed what I asked.”

“So you let me call the police on her.”

Katherine went quiet.

That answer was yes.

“Why?”

“I panicked.”

“About what?”

“Our custody situation.”

There.

Not physical danger.

Not kidnapping.

A marriage already coming apart.

Katherine continued:

“If I admitted I had arranged for Noah to be taken somewhere you didn't know, I thought you would use it in court.”

“Would you have?”

Noah asked.

Daniel looked at him.

The question was brutal because children ask legal history without knowing they are asking legal history.

Daniel said:

“I don't know.”

Katherine said quietly:

“I thought you would.”

Noah looked down.

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“What happened when Mara brought him back?”

Katherine said:

“She was furious with me.”

“Good.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“What did you tell her?”

“That I needed her to stop making it worse.”

Daniel stared.

“You made her the problem.”

“Yes.”

Katherine sounded ashamed.

“She had helped me. Then I wanted the help to disappear.”

The room stayed quiet.

I thought that might be the central truth.

It wasn't.

Daniel asked:

“Why was she sleeping in her car?”

Katherine went silent again.

“You knew.”

“I knew later.”

“When?”

“After.”

“After what?”

Katherine took a breath.

“She lost her apartment.”

“Why?”

“She gave me the deposit money.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Katherine continued:

“I was trying to move out.”

Noah looked at his parents.

I wished he weren't hearing this.

I also understood why he refused to leave.

Daniel said:

“You were planning to leave me.”

Katherine laughed softly.

“We divorced, Daniel.”

“Seven years ago.”

“Yes.”

“That week.”

“Yes.”

Daniel stared at nothing.

Katherine continued:

“Mara gave me almost everything she had saved to help me put down a deposit.”

“And then you went back home.”

“Yes.”

“To me.”

“For another year.”

Daniel understood.

Mara had sacrificed money and housing to help Katherine leave.

Then Katherine returned to the marriage.

Mara became the easiest person for both of them to resent.

Daniel's voice dropped.

“Did Mara know you went back?”

“Of course.”

“What did she say?”

Katherine hesitated.

“That if I was going back, I needed to tell you the truth about Noah.”

Daniel looked at the phone.

“And?”

“I didn't.”

Noah whispered:

“For seven years?”

Katherine's voice cracked.

“Yes.”

That was the first time Daniel stopped looking angry.

He looked sick.

Then Katherine said:

“Daniel, there’s something else.”

He stared.

“What?”

“Mara didn't disappear because you told her to.”

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“She came back to Bell & Finch three days later.”

Luis, still near the doorway, stopped moving.

Katherine continued:

“She asked me to meet her here.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“What did she want?”

Katherine's answer came quietly.

“She wanted me to tell you what really happened.”

Daniel looked toward the glass wall.

The same corridor where a woman had just appeared in reflection.

“And what did you do?”

May you like

Katherine swallowed.

“I asked Mara to leave town.”
