Chapter 12 - Noah Asked Mara The Only Question That Mattered To Him

Three days later, Daniel brought Noah back to Bell & Finch.

Not for another confrontation.

Lunch.

He asked Helen first.

She asked me.

I said the restaurant was open to the public and I wasn't interested in becoming gatekeeper for a family I didn't belong to.

Helen said:

“So yes?”

“That's your interpretation.”

She smiled.

Mara came separately.

No uniform.

No borrowed name.

She had received a written trespass warning from all employee-only areas after returning my badge and vest.

The restaurant chose not to pursue the matter further unless she returned to restricted space.

Grounded consequences.

Not absolution.

Emily did not come.

Katherine did.

June stayed away.

Susan stayed away.

Fewer adults.

Progress.

I served another section.

They sat in a booth near the windows.

I could see them but did not join.

Noah sat opposite Mara.

Daniel and Katherine sat at the ends.

Not framing him.

Just there.

Noah asked:

“Is your name really Mara Hayes?”

“Yes.”

“Are you Dad’s sister?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know me when I was a baby?”

“Yes.”

“Did you take me?”

Mara took a breath.

“Your mom asked me to pick you up.”

Noah looked at Katherine.

She nodded.

Mara continued:

“I should have told your dad where you were.”

Noah looked at Daniel.

“Did you know Mom asked?”

“Not at first.”

“When did you know?”

“Before Mara came to the house that night.”

Noah frowned.

“Then why didn't you let her in?”

Daniel took time.

“Because I was furious.”

“At her?”

“Yes.”

“At Mom?”

“Yes.”

“Which one more?”

Daniel almost laughed.

“Probably her.”

“Why?”

“Because being angry at your mom was harder.”

Katherine looked at him.

That hurt.

She did not deny it.

Noah returned to Mara.

“Why did you call yourself Claire?”

Mara looked toward me.

I immediately shook my head.

Not mine.

She looked back.

“Because your parents had told me not to meet you.”

“So you lied.”

“Yes.”

“Would you do it again?”

Mara hesitated.

Then:

“No.”

Noah narrowed his eyes.

“You took too long.”

Mara smiled sadly.

“I know.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m still angry that I lost seven years.”

Daniel's face tightened.

Mara continued before he could.

“That does not make it okay to use you to get them back.”

Noah sat with that.

Then:

“Do I have to hug you?”

Mara's face changed.

“No.”

“Good.”

He looked at his menu.

“I don't remember you.”

“I know.”

“Does that make you sad?”

“Yes.”

Noah nodded.

No apology.

He did not owe one.

Then he asked:

“Can I ask something about when I was a baby?”

Mara said:

“If your mom and dad say it's okay.”

Daniel and Katherine looked at each other.

Noah caught it.

“Why do you keep doing that?”

“What?” Katherine asked.

“Looking.”

Daniel almost smiled.

“Because we have to agree.”

“Okay.”

He waited.

Daniel said:

“Ask.”

Noah looked at Mara.

“Did I cry a lot?”

Mara laughed.

The first full laugh I had heard from her.

“You screamed like somebody was stealing your car.”

Noah looked offended.

“I was a baby.”

“I know.”

“What made me stop?”

Mara thought.

“Kitchen fan.”

“What?”

“You liked the sound.”

Noah smiled despite himself.

Daniel did too.

Katherine looked down.

A tiny shared memory.

No accusation.

No legal history.

For ten minutes, they talked about Noah as a baby.

Spaghetti thrown on floors.

A stuffed turtle.

The word “dog” apparently applied to all animals.

Nothing that required deciding who had betrayed whom.

Then Noah asked:

“Are you staying here?”

Mara looked at Daniel.

Caught herself.

Looked back at Noah.

“I don't know.”

“Do you want to?”

“Yes.”

Daniel's shoulders tightened.

Noah looked at him.

“You don't want her to.”

Daniel answered honestly.

“I don't know yet.”

Noah sighed.

“That's a lot of don't know.”

Mara nodded.

“Yeah.”

May you like

Then he reached for a fry.

The meeting continued anyway.
