Chapter 8 - THE WHISPERS OF HOLLOW PINE

The west wing of the main lodge was a masterpiece of timber-frame architecture—soaring ceilings built from reclaimed Douglas fir, floor-to-ceiling glass walls overlooking the dark pine valley, and a massive stone fireplace that cast a deep, amber glow across hand-woven rugs. Unlike the rest of the resort, which catered to high-net-worth travelers seeking secluded luxury, this wing was intensely personal. It was where Thomas had lived before his death, preserved in near-silent stillness for over a year.
Ruth led the young woman into the master sitting room, guiding her gently toward a plush leather armchair beside the roaring fire. She wrapped a thick, warm cashmere throw around the girl's shoulders and placed a steaming mug of herbal tea into her hands.
“Drink slowly, dear,” Ruth murmured, her voice like a soothing balm against the girl’s frayed nerves. “The mineral springs take more out of a body than people realize, especially when you’re carrying heavy burdens.”
The woman held the warm ceramic mug with both hands, letting the steam warm her pale face. “My name is Clara,” she offered quietly, looking up at the elderly woman with a mixture of gratitude and guilt. “Clara Vance. I really didn't mean to cause trouble. My friend won a two-night stay in the resort raffle, but she couldn't make it because of work... she gave me the voucher. I just needed to get away from the city for a few days.”
Ruth smiled warmly, pulling a small wooden stool closer and sitting beside her. “You didn't cause trouble, Clara. In fact, I haven't heard him speak that many words in a single afternoon since last summer.”
Clara paused, her mug halfway to her lips. “The resort owner?”
“His name is Julian,” Ruth said softly, her eyes drifting toward the dark glass window where the reflection of the fire danced against the pine trees outside. “Julian Hollow. His family built this place three generations ago. But fourteen months ago... his older brother Thomas was killed in a rockslide up on the high ridge. Julian tried to dig him out with his bare hands before the rescue team arrived. He spent three weeks in intensive care with severe crush injuries to his chest and shoulder.”
Clara’s heart tightened as the pieces of the puzzle began to fit together in her mind. The deep scar near his collarbone, the hyper-vigilance of his security detail, the profound sadness beneath his intimidating presence—it all stemmed from a moment of catastrophic trauma.
“He survived,” Ruth continued, her voice dropping into a tender whisper, “but a part of him remained buried under those rocks. He shut down the west wing, stopped taking executive meetings, and spent his days locked away in his private quarters. And then that shaking in his hand started... a constant reminder that he couldn't save his brother.”
Clara looked down at the tea swirling in her cup. As a nursing student who had completed rotations in neurological trauma wards, she understood the profound connection between physical injury, chronic pain, and unresolved grief. The human body was an intricate web of electrical signals and emotional memories; when the mind refused to process a catastrophic loss, the nervous system often found its own, destructive ways to express the pain.
Before Clara could respond, the heavy oak door of the sitting room swung open.
Vince Dawson stepped into the room, holding a sleek black tablet in his hand. His expression was stern, his eyes cold as he walked straight toward Clara, stopping just a few feet from her chair. Behind him, standing in the doorway with his arms crossed over his chest, was Julian Hollow.
Vince tapped the screen of his tablet, his tone sharp and formal. “Clara Vance. Twenty-seven years old. Former nursing candidate at Oregon Health & Science University. Withdrew from the program three months ago following a formal leave of absence.”

Clara stiffened, her fingers tightening around her mug.
Vince looked up from the screen, his gaze locking onto her bruised wrist. “Care to explain why an unemployed nursing student with a spotless record suddenly checked into a high-end resort with defense wounds on her arm?”
