Chapter 1 - SILENT STEAM AND SHADOWS AT HOLLOW PINE

The warm, golden light of late afternoon filtered through the dense pine canopy surrounding the restricted wing of Hollow Pine Resort, casting long, geometric shadows across the hand-cut stone terraces. Hidden deep within the private cliffs of the Oregon mountain range, the private mineral pool courtyard was designed as an absolute sanctuary—a place strictly forbidden to guests, staff, and media alike. Thick plumes of white mineral steam rose lazily from the natural thermal waters, curling into the crisp mountain air and creating a soft, shifting veil over the turquoise surface. The tranquil sound of water cascading gently over smooth granite rocks provided a steady backdrop, masking the subtle rustle of pine needles overhead.
The heavy, hand-carved oak gate leading into the private enclosure swung open with a muted creak. The Resort Owner stepped onto the stone deck. In his late thirties, he possessed an imposing, athletic stature that commanded attention without the need for posture or pretense. His muscular shoulders and chest were marked by intricate, dark ink work that snaked up his neck, contrasting sharply with the pale scars running down his back. Wearing only black swim shorts, he walked with a measured, deliberate stride honed by years of managing a sprawling luxury empire. Yet beneath his controlled, intimidating exterior lay a deep, emotional guardedness—a heavy silence that had settled over him fourteen months ago following the tragic loss of his older brother, Thomas.
He took three slow steps across the heated flagstones before coming to a sudden, complete stop.
His dark eyes narrowed through the rising thermal steam. Floating near the far edge of the mineral pool, resting against the moss-covered granite lip, was a figure that did not belong.
An unknown woman lay completely motionless, her head tilted awkwardly against the stone edge. She was in her late twenties, with dark-blond hair soaked dark and clinging to her pale neck and cheeks. Wrapped tightly in a wet, heavy white resort towel, she seemed entirely consumed by exhaustion, her breathing shallow and slow. Floating gently on the clear water beside her was her left arm, her wrist turned upward—revealing a dark, non-graphic purple bruise that wrapped around her delicate skin like an cruel cuff. Another faint shadow of discoloration was visible near the line of her shoulder where the towel had slipped.
The Resort Owner remained motionless for several long seconds, his gaze locked onto the sleeping intruder. The atmosphere in the courtyard grew thick with a quiet, heavy tension. He had built this resort to escape the eyes of the world, to hide from the constant demands of his title and the persistent phantom of his brother’s memory. An unauthorized guest in his private thermal pool was a breach that should have triggered an immediate security response.
Yet he did not call for help.
Slowly, almost reverently, he reached down to the charcoal robe draped over a nearby cedar bench. He unbuckled the belt and lifted the heavy, plush fabric into his arms. Stepping silently over the wet stone deck, he closed the distance between them, stopping just inches from where her head rested against the rock.
He knelt down on one knee. Up close, her face was drawn, etched with a profound, bone-deep fatigue that went far beyond mere lack of sleep. She was completely unaware of his presence, lost in a heavy, unnatural slumber brought on by the combination of extreme exhaustion and the soothing heat of the mineral spring.

The Resort Owner paused, his eyes lingering on the dark purple marks along her wrist. A subtle flick of emotion crossed his usually stoic features—a mixture of deep concern and an instinctual, protective anger. Without making a sound, he opened the charcoal robe and carefully lowered it over her trembling shoulders, draping the heavy, warm fabric around her wet towel to shield her from the cooling mountain breeze.
She did not stir. She remained deeply asleep, suspended in the steaming water, entirely at the mercy of the man standing above her.
