Chapter 6 - THE DIAGNOSIS IN THE STEAM

The entire courtyard descended into a heavy, absolute silence. The only sound remaining was the gentle hiss of mineral steam rising off the turquoise water and the distant rustle of pine needles in the mountain wind.

Vince Dawson, who was standing near the arched gateway, noticed the woman’s sudden pause. His security instincts immediately flared. He took a sharp step forward onto the deck, his hand reaching toward his belt as he prepared to intervene and escort her out of the courtyard.

“Ma'am, you need to keep moving toward the exit—” Vince began harshly.

“Vince,” the Resort Owner snapped without looking back, his left hand still white-knuckled as he clamped down on his trembling right wrist. “Stand down.”

Vince checked his movement, remaining near the archway, though his eyes remained locked on the woman with intense suspicion.

The woman didn't back away. She didn't look frightened by the security guard’s warning, nor by the Resort Owner’s commanding tone. Instead, she took a half-step back toward the owner, her dark eyes fixed on the involuntary tremor violently shaking his right hand.

She studied the tremor for one long, silent beat.

Her gaze shifted from his hand up along the inner line of his forearm, tracking the tension in his flexor tendons. Then, her eyes moved higher, resting on the complex network of tattoos covering his shoulder and neck—specifically focusing on the deep, faint surgical scar that cut through the ink near his collarbone.

She looked directly into the Resort Owner’s dark, guarded eyes.

“That tremor isn’t coming from your hand,” she said smoothly, her voice completely devoid of hesitation or doubt.

Everything in the courtyard went dead still.

Ruth held her breath near the archway, her hands clutching the fresh laundry to her chest. Vince froze near the entrance, his jaw dropping slightly in shock. For fourteen months, top neurologists, elite sports physicians, and private specialists from across the country had examined the Resort Owner’s hand, prescribing physical therapy, nerve blocks, and medication—all to no avail. None of them had spoken to him with such absolute, effortless certainty.

Slowly, deliberately, the Resort Owner released his grip on his right wrist. His hand continued to shake violently in the open air between them.

He slowly turned his body, facing her fully under the golden light of the setting sun.

“What did you say?” he asked, his voice dropping into an intensely low, dangerous whisper that vibrated with raw emotion.

The woman didn't shrink back. She stood her ground on the wet flagstones, wrapped in her resort towels, her bruised wrist tucked against her side. She looked from his trembling hand, up past his scarred shoulder, and straight into his eyes—not with pity, but with a sudden, startling recognition.

It was as if, in a single glance, she had perceived a hidden, underlying truth about his body and his injury—a medical reality that no high-priced doctor had ever managed to see, or perhaps one that he had been hiding from himself since the day his brother died.

The mountain sun dipped fully behind the high pine ridge, casting the courtyard into deep blue twilight as the steam continued to rise around them in silence.
