Chapter 4 - THE CARRIED PROTECTOR

Lorenzo didn't utter a single curse word. He didn't smash his fists against the brick wall. He simply dropped back down on one knee, reaching his broad, tattoo-covered right hand out toward the tiny girl sitting in the dust.
His hand was vast compared to her—a palm scarred by fights, covered in silver rings and heavy dark ink—yet he held it open, soft, and completely still.
"No one is locking your mother in a cage, Sophia," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a quiet, absolute promise that resonated like an oath. "And no one is throwing you out. I give you my word."
Sophia looked at the large hand extended toward her. She looked at Pino, who gave her knee another gentle nudge with his nose, and then looked into Lorenzo’s steady gray eyes.
Slowly, trust overcoming her terror, Sophia reached out her small right hand. Her tiny, delicate fingers wrapped around Lorenzo’s thick thumb.
With effortless, fluid strength, Lorenzo reached his other arm under her small frame, scooping her up into the air in one smooth motion. He lifted her easily against his broad chest, holding her securely with his muscular left arm.
The moment her feet left the concrete, Sophia wrapped her small arms around Lorenzo’s neck, resting her sweat-slicked forehead directly against the soft black leather of his motorcycle vest, burying her face into his shoulder. She held her battered stuffed rabbit tightly in her small hand, letting out a long, shuddering sigh of relief.

Pino immediately fell into position. The large Doberman turned on his heel, stepping out of the narrow alcove and positioning himself directly beside Lorenzo’s right boot—a sharp, living weapon walking in precise lockstep with his master.
Lorenzo turned away from the rear alleyway and began walking down the long, sunlit corridor toward the grand front entrance of the Iron Kings Clubhouse. His heavy boots struck the floor in a slow, ominous rhythm, the golden autumn daylight reflecting off the silver chains on his vest as he carried the small girl toward the confrontation awaiting them inside.
