Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

The silence inside the bedroom became unbearable. Nancy stood beside the bed, her head bowed, her hands clasped tightly in front of her dress. She knew the contents of the file—she had been the one to receive the emergency courier from Dominic’s private intelligence team twenty minutes earlier.

Dominic lowered the file slightly, his gaze fixed on the sleeping little boy.

"Nancy," Dominic whispered, his voice trembling with a rare, terrifying vulnerability. "Is this verified? Who processed these samples?"

Nancy stepped closer, her whisper strained: "Dr. Vance handled it personally at the private lab in Midtown, sir. The match is 99.9%. There is no error."

Dominic’s mind raced backward through time, piecing together fragments of a dark, forgotten history.

Five years ago, before the ambush that put him in a wheelchair, Dominic had a younger brother, Julian—a brilliant, quiet man who had been murdered during the same turf war that crippled Dominic. Julian’s pregnant fiancée had disappeared shortly after his death, swallowed by the vastness of the country, presumed dead by Dominic’s security team.

Dominic looked down at the paper again, then back at Megan.

Megan Foster wasn't just a random house cleaner hired six weeks ago. She was Julian’s widow—a woman who had changed her name, hidden her identity, and survived on the streets of Atlanta alone, raising Julian’s son in complete obscurity.

And little Leo, sleeping peacefully under the faded yellow blanket, was not just Megan's son.
