Chapter 5 - The Unbroken Smile

Present day — Just before dawn.
Back in the quiet bedroom, the memory faded into the cool indigo shadows of the morning.
Dominic looked back down at his left hand. Megan’s soft, warm fingers were still wrapped loosely around his palm. Her breathing was steady and deep, her face relaxed in peaceful slumber. Leo remained tucked under her arm, his little face buried against the old yellow blanket.
The contrast between Dominic’s harsh, violent reality and the gentle innocence of the mother and child sleeping beside him was overwhelming.
For thirty years, Dominic had lived behind an impenetrable emotional shield. He had buried his grief, his pain, and his humanity beneath layers of ruthlessness, building an empire where love was considered a lethal flaw.
Yet as he looked at Megan’s tired, peaceful face, something inside his chest cracked open.
The harsh line of his mouth slowly softened. The corners of his lips began to lift, forming a gentle, genuine smile—a real, warm expression that had not touched Dominic Mason’s face in over a decade.
Standing quietly at the partially open bedroom doorway was Nancy Price.
She had walked up the hallway carrying a fresh pitcher of ice water, intending to check on her employer’s condition. But as she looked through the gap in the door, she stopped dead in her tracks.

Nancy froze completely. Her eyes widened in utter disbelief as she saw Dominic—the cold, terrifying ruler of the estate—sitting up in bed, smiling down with profound tenderness at the house cleaner and her sleeping child.
In fifteen years of service, Nancy had never seen Dominic smile like that. It was as if a ghost from his past had suddenly returned to inhabit his body.
