Chapter 7 - The Unseen Evidence

Dominic reached out his tattooed arm and took the file from the table.
The cover of the folder was plain leather, devoid of labels or stamps, concealing its contents entirely from the camera's view.
Dominic flipped open the front cover.
The camera, positioned over Dominic’s right shoulder within the vertical 9:16 frame, focused closely on his face, keeping the text and images printed on the pages completely invisible to the viewer.
Dominic’s eyes scanned the first few lines of the top document.
The gentle warmth that had filled his chest only moments ago vanished instantly, obliterated by a wave of cold, terrifying shock.
His smile disappeared completely. His jaw locked tightly, a vein pulsing at his temple. His dark pupils dilated in sheer, unadulterated disbelief as he absorbed the confidential information laid out before him.
His fingers tightened around the edges of the paper so hard that the heavy cardstock crinkled under his grip.
The file contained a detailed background report—DNA match results, hospital records from eighteen months ago, and classified intelligence regarding an old betrayal that had cost Dominic his mobility five years earlier.
The connection was impossible. It defied every probability of his carefully controlled life.
Dominic slowly lifted his head from the file.
His eyes, now wide and filled with a terrifying mixture of horror, awe, and heartbreak, shifted away from the paper and turned toward the chair beside his bed.
He stared at Megan Foster, still sleeping peacefully in her ordinary work clothes, and then looked down at little eighteen-month-old Leo, wrapped in the faded yellow blanket.
Dominic’s chest heaved with a ragged, silent breath.

He opened his mouth, his voice a hoarse, disbelieving whisper that barely carried across the quiet room:
“How...?”
