Chapter 4 - THE MASTER SERGEANT'S SUSPICION

Daniel stood near the corner of the command table, studying Maya’s physiology with meticulous scrutiny.
Her gloved right hand was wrapped firmly around the pistol grip of her rifle, her index finger resting indexing straight along the lower receiver above the trigger guard. The flesh of her knuckles was relaxed, showing no signs of a white-knuckle grip. Her shoulders rested low and natural, completely free of the tension that causes shot displacement.
Most tellingly, her chest rose and fell in a slow, rhythmic pattern—exhale, pause, pull—the universal signature of a high-level marksman operating in total control of their autonomic nervous system.
Daniel looked up at the giant red LED numbers on the scoreboard: MAYA BENNETT — 0.
He looked back down at her steady hands, her unblinking focus, and the deliberate angle of her posture. The mathematical discrepancy between her mechanics and her recorded score was absolute.
Slowly, deliberately, Daniel lowered his clipboard all the way to his side.
Captain Logan Pierce noticed the veteran instructor’s movement and turned toward him, his eyebrows raised in amusement.
May you like
"What?" Logan asked, chuckling as he gestured toward Maya. "You going to give her a retake, Master Sergeant? She missed the entire barn door."
Daniel did not answer him. He didn't even turn his head to acknowledge the officer.
