Chapter 1 - THE DISCORDANT ZERO

The blinding heat of the harsh North Carolina sun beat down on the wide, sun-bleached gravel expanse of Fort Liberty’s primary qualification range. A heavy shimmer of heat haze rose off the sandy berm in the far distance, distorting the horizon line where the steel silhouette targets stood in rigid formation. The air smelled strongly of spent gunpowder, hot copper, and dry pine needles baking in the midday heat.
Standing firm inside lane seven was twenty-nine-year-old Maya Bennett. Her brown hair was pulled back into a tight, neat ponytail that rested flush against her upper back, beneath her tactical helmet. Wearing a crisp combat uniform with dusty tan combat boots planted shoulder-width apart, Maya’s entire posture radiated an unnatural, absolute calmness.
BANG!
The sharp, deafening report of her fifth shot cracked through the heavy air, echoing across the open range. Maya absorbed the weapon’s recoil smoothly through her chest and shoulders, her sight picture returning instantly to the center of the downrange silhouette without a single tremor.
Above lane seven, the high-contrast digital bulb of the electronic scoreboard flickered twice before settling into a stark, unambiguous readout:
MAYA BENNETT — 0
Standing three paces behind her, thirty-five-year-old Captain Logan Pierce let out a loud, mocking bark of laughter. Tall, broad-shouldered, with short brown hair peeking out beneath his soft cover, Logan crossed his arms over his combat uniform, enjoying the public spectacle.
"Five rounds. Five misses," Logan declared loudly, raising his voice so the entire platoon assembled behind the safety boundary could hear.
May you like
A wave of sharp, collective laughter erupted from the group of soldiers and instructors waiting behind the red line.
Maya did not flinch, curse, or glance up at the board. With deliberate, surgical grace, she slowly lowered her service rifle to a safe low-ready position, her thumb flicking the selector switch back to safe with an audible click.
