Chapter 18 - THE RECKONING

Carmen’s face turned an ashen, horrified gray. "You... you didn't..."

"Every shell company, every offshore trust, every political donation you made using drug money from Colombia," Alexander said, his voice cold and unforgiving. "It’s all gone, Carmen. You didn't just lose the three hundred million. You lost everything your father built over forty years."

Javier dropped to his knees in the mud, weeping hysterically as the reality of his family's utter destruction hit him. "Mother... Mother, what do we do? What do we do?!"

"Get up, you pathetic coward!" Carmen screamed, her composure entirely shattering as she hit her son across the face with her handbag.

"Drop your weapons," Alexander commanded the eight security contractors. "You're hired guns. Your paychecks bounced twenty minutes ago when the federal marshal seized the Robles primary bank accounts. If you lower your rifles now, you walk out of here. If you hold them for three more seconds, my snipers clear the floor."

A heavy, agonizing silence descended over the yard.

One by one, the eight contractors lowered their weapons, letting their rifles drop with heavy thuds into the mud. They backed away slowly with their hands raised, vanishing into the rain and darkness, completely abandoning the Robles family.

Carmen stood alone beside her kneeling, sobbing son in the pouring rain, her white suit ruined, her hair plastered to her face, her emerald rings gleaming uselessly in the glare of the headlights.

Maya walked forward until she was standing three feet from Javier. She reached down with her left hand, pulling the diamond engagement ring off her finger, and dropped it into the mud in front of his face.

"The marriage is annulled, Javier," Maya said softly.
