Chapter 9 - THE LESSON IN THE PERIMETER CORRIDOR

Outside the cafeteria, the cool morning air of the compound perimeter corridor offered a sharp contrast to the warm, food-scented atmosphere of the mess hall. Concrete walls lined with heavy conduits and tactical communications wiring stretched in both directions, lit by sparse overhead LED fixtures.

Command Master Chief Carter walked with a steady, unhurried pace down the center of the hallway. Her worn utility jacket was smooth, the repair seams along her shoulders settling naturally against her posture. Her left boot still bore the faint, dark stain of black coffee, but she paid it no attention. To a professional who had spent decades in the field, a stained boot was a non-event.

From a side corridor up ahead, an officer stepped out—Commander Thomas Vance, the base’s executive officer. Vance was in his late forties, carrying a thick binder of operational logistics schedules. As he saw Carter approaching, he stopped in his tracks, instantly coming to an informal, respectful halt.

"Master Chief," Vance said, offering a crisp, respectful nod. "I heard you arrived on the early transport from District Command. We didn't expect you in the main compound until fourteen-hundred."

"I wanted to see the mess hall," Carter replied simply, stopping briefly beside him. "It gives a clearer picture of unit discipline than a prepared briefing slide."

Vance glanced down at her faded uniform, then at the faint coffee stain on her boot. He raised an eyebrow slightly, an old, knowing smile touching his lips.

"Did you run into Morrison's team?" Vance asked.

"Lieutenant Morrison is enthusiastic," Carter noted dryly, her expression unreadable. "He places a very high value on immaculate uniforms and designated seating arrangements."

Vance let out a short, quiet laugh, shaking his head. "He’s arrogant, Master Chief. His team has good tactical scores on the range, but he thinks the uniform makes the operator. I was planning on replacing his squad leader next month anyway."

Carter paused, looking down the quiet, concrete corridor toward the tactical briefing rooms at the far end.

"Don't replace his squad leader," Carter said calmly. "Let him stay in command. But send his team to the land-navigation and endurance range at zero-four-hundred tomorrow morning. Full combat loads. No fresh uniforms."

Vance nodded immediately, taking a small pen from his pocket and making a quick note on his binder. "Understood, Master Chief. Anything else?"

"Tell him to bring a fresh tray of eggs," Carter added, a tiny, almost imperceptible flicker of dry humor appearing at the corner of her mouth before vanishing just as quickly. "He owes me a breakfast."
