Chapter 8 - THE AFTERMATH IN THE MESS HALL

The silence inside the operator base cafeteria persisted long after the heavy double doors at the exit swung shut behind Command Master Chief Carter.

For nearly thirty seconds, not a single person in the room moved. The grid of overhead fluorescent lights continued its steady, high-pitched hum, casting stark white light over the scene: the rows of operators standing at absolute attention, the framed black-and-white photographs along the walls, and the mess on the concrete floor in the center aisle.

At the far wall, the gray-haired Senior Chief slowly relaxed his posture, though his face remained grim and set. He turned his head and looked across the length of the cafeteria, his eyes locking onto Lieutenant Jake Morrison with a look of profound, disgust-filled contempt.

The Senior Chief stepped away from his table and walked slowly down the central aisle. His heavy boots clicked against the floor with deliberate, ominous weight.

As he reached the center of the room, he stopped two feet from Jake, who was still standing at rigid attention, staring blankly at the far wall, his face pale and slick with sweat.

"Do you have any idea who you just laid hands on, Lieutenant?" the Senior Chief asked softly, his voice dangerously low.

Jake swallowed hard, his throat dry. "Senior Chief... I..."

"Shut your mouth," the Senior Chief interrupted without raising his voice. "Master Chief Carter built the operational framework this entire unit uses. She was in Khost when you were still in high school officer candidate school. Half the men in those frames on that wall are alive because she drew the target packages, and the other half were buried with full honors because she personally went into cold zones to bring their bodies back."

Ryan Cole, standing next to Jake, looked down at his own hands, his face burning with shame.

The Senior Chief turned his gaze to the floor—to the shattered breakfast tray, the scattered scrambled eggs, and the puddle of dark black coffee where Carter had been standing.

"You told her to go back to paperwork," the Senior Chief said, shaking his head slowly. "You better pray to God she stays on administrative duty today, Lieutenant. Because if she decides to log this incident with Command, you won't be leading a tactical team. You'll be scrubbing grease traps at a naval depot in the Aleutian Islands."

The Senior Chief leaned in closer to Jake’s ear.

"Now get on your knees and clean up her tray."
