Chapter 6 - THE BLACK CREDENTIAL WALLET AND THE INSTANT SALUTE

The atmosphere in the crowded base cafeteria was so taut it felt on the verge of snapping. Dozens of eyes were locked on Carter’s right hand as it slid smoothly into the internal coat pocket of her worn utility jacket.
Jake Morrison stood inches from her, his hand still clamped onto her lapel, but his chest was rising and falling in shallow, rapid breaths. The absolute lack of fear in her eyes was alarming.
Carter’s hand emerged from inside her jacket.
Held tightly between her index and middle fingers was an item that immediately caught the stark fluorescent light from above: a worn, heavy, black leather credential wallet. The leather was soft, hand-burnished, and smoothed at the edges from years of being carried in high-threat environments. Set deep into the center of the leather cover was a polished, solid-gold crest—an intricate, highly specialized military emblem featuring an eagle, crossed tridents, and a central operational star that was not part of standard naval or joint command iconography.
With a precise, single-handed flick of her wrist, Carter flipped the leather wallet open, holding it flat at Jake’s eye level.
The physical angle was specific: the credential card mounted inside—protected under thick, anti-reflective ballistic plastic—was visible only to Lieutenant Jake Morrison and Ryan Cole standing immediately next to him. The rest of the cafeteria personnel behind them could see only the back of the black leather wallet and the dull shine of the brass hinges.
Jake’s eyes dropped to the open credential.
Within half a second, every trace of color drained from Jake’s face. His eyes widened, his pupils dilating as his brain processed the text, the seal, the special-access authorization codes, and the absurdly high rank stamped across the top of the dark ID card. The credential did not list a standard unit or a local base assignment; it carried an unrestricted, top-echelon operational authority seal that placed the holder directly above base commanders, unit leaders, and regional staff officers.
Jake’s grin vanished so completely it was as if it had never existed. His mouth remained slightly open, his jaw slackening in pure, unadulterated shock.
Before Carter could speak a single word, a loud, heavy scrape of metal against concrete echoed from the far wall of the cafeteria.
The Senior Chief—a veteran operator in his late fifties with graying hair, a weathered face, and three operational deployment stars on his chest—abruptly pushed his table back. He stood up with violent speed, his body snapping into a rigid, textbook position of attention. His heels came together with a sharp CLACK, his hands locked against his seams, his eyes staring straight ahead with absolute, unyielding military discipline.
"Command Master Chief Carter," the Senior Chief barked, his voice booming across the concrete room like a naval cannon.

The title echoed off the stainless-steel tables and the block walls.
In an instant, every single face in the cafeteria changed.
