Chapter 8 - THE REAL INSPECTION

The operators along the benches, quick to read the sudden change in the Range Officer’s posture and Mercer’s pale face, realized instantly that the balance of power had shifted completely. The quiet rustle of tactical gear echoed down the line as men stood up a little straighter, their previous amusement vanishing into sharp, professional attention.

The woman stepped around the firing bench, taking a single step toward Mercer. Her posture was erect, commanding, and impeccably refined.

“Lieutenant Colonel Mercer,” she said softly, her voice carrying a crisp authority that cut through the open desert air. “The rifle at Lane Twelve was set in a safe-clear diagnostic position, muzzle angled down-range at the forty-five-degree safety trap for chamber clearance—a standard protocol for non-standard weapons evaluation.”

Mercer swallowed hard, his throat dry. “Ma’am... I was not informed of a DIOD audit on this sector today.”

“That is the point of an unannounced evaluation, Colonel,” she replied smoothly, her dark eyes locking onto his. “When an officer approaches a firing line, his first duty is situational awareness, not a public performance for an audience.”

She looked down at the paper coffee cup still clutched in his trembling hand, then back up to his eyes.

“You failed to verify the weapon status, you failed to check the clearance flags, and you disrupted an active diagnostic test to deliver a condescending lecture,” she continued, her voice level, measured, and devastatingly precise. “If this is how you conduct safety oversight on a live-fire range, I have serious concerns about how you command your battalion in the field.”

Mercer opened his mouth to reply, but no sound came out. The silence from the watching operators was absolute.
