Chapter 3 - THE ANONYMOUS TARGET

Mercer took a slow sip from his paper coffee cup, his dark eyes narrowing as he conducted a thorough visual sweep of the woman standing before him.
He looked for the standard markers of military authority or civilian status, but found nothing. There was no rank stitched onto her chest, no unit patch sewn onto her sleeve, no name tape pinned above her pocket, and no visitor lanyard hanging around her neck. She was an absolute anomaly in a facility governed entirely by strict protocols, visual hierarchies, and clear chain-of-command badges.
A subtle smirk played across Mercer’s face. In his mind, an unidentified civilian in plain clothes on a restricted military range was an easy target for a public display of authority. He raised his coffee cup slightly in her direction, projecting his voice even further so that it carried across the entire line of benches.
“Looks like we’re getting an unexpected lesson this morning,” Mercer proclaimed with dripping sarcasm.

A wider wave of laughter rippled across the firing line. Operators leaned against the wooden support posts, cross-armed and smiling, waiting to see how the embarrassed civilian would crumble under the Lieutenant Colonel’s public dressing-down.
Yet, as the laughter swelled around her, the woman stood like a pillar of granite amidst the desert wind. She did not raise her voice, twitch a muscle in her face, or display even a flicker of defensiveness. Her calmness was not the passive freezing of someone caught in a mistake; it was the steady, icy detachment of an individual who operated on a plane far above the petty posturing taking place behind her back.
