Chapter 5 - THE ONE-WORD SHIELD

Mercer came to a halt several feet away from the edge of the firing bench, adjusting his grip on the warm paper coffee cup. He squared his shoulders, attempting to reassert his dominant posture over the plain-clothed woman standing beside the precision rifle.
“You hear me, ma’am?” Mercer demanded, his tone dropping into a firmer, less theatrical register.
The woman maintained direct, unbroken eye contact with the Lieutenant Colonel. Her posture remained perfectly poised, her shoulders relaxed and down.
“Yes.”
Her voice was crisp, clear, and utterly devoid of emotion. It was a single syllable, spoken without hesitation, without anger, and without a single title of respect added to the end.
The simple, unadorned answer hung in the dry morning air like a heavy weight. It offered no explanation, no justification, and no opening for further scolding.
Around them, the remaining laughter died completely. The operators along the nearby lanes exchanged silent, bewildered glances. The sheer lack of panic in her tone was startling. On a military facility where every response was dictated by rigid honorifics and rank structure, her stark, flat answer was a profound display of absolute self-assurance.

Mercer stood waiting, expecting her to follow up with an explanation of who she was, who authorized her presence, or why she was handling the weapon at Lane Twelve.
She gave him nothing. She simply continued to stare directly into his eyes, waiting with cool, unblinking patience for his next move.
